That is a good idea as I do have a couple old Fido phones I have been meaning to get rid of.Donating an old cellphone will go a long distance in helping the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society.
The food bank strengthened its partnership with Rogers Wireless, announcing an extension of the current Phones For Food program yesterday. Customers can now mail old mobiles to a recycling plant in a prepaid envelope packaged with new phones on top of dropping off old phones at authorized Rogers locations. Proceeds from recycling will be donated to food banks across the country.
"This is like winning the lottery in the middle of February for us," said GVFBS executive director Cheryl Prepchuk.
Because the food bank triples its purchasing power with other industry partnerships a recycled cellphone valued up to $5 can net $15 in food.
Prepchuk oversees the distribution of more than 150,000 pounds of food to 25,000 people weekly in Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby and the North Shore.
