I drove to St. Augustine last night with a friend to see Maria Taylor (of Azure Ray) play at a small cafe at the beach. There were three opening acts. One was a chick named Christina Wagner who bartends at the local rock club in Jacksonville. She has a very strong beautiful voice. The second group of guys were lame so I don't remember anything about them. The third act was Apollo Sunshine and the whole time they played, my friend and I were laughing because every song sounded completely different. We kept looking at each other screaming, "Are they going to pick a genre?" Some songs reminded me of the Allman Brothers, some of the synthesizer sounds reminded me of Sigur Ros, some songs reminded me of Old Crow Medicine Show, etc. But by the end of the night, I wanted to own their music!
They sold out of their CDs last night, so I found them on iTunes this morning. My favorite song they played was "Magnolia", because they totally rocked out during certain parts of the song. It's not the same on the album version. The live version was so much better!
They definitely have an interesting, different sound. I think they are gonna be one of those "gotta see 'em live" bands of the future!
