Alford to leave Iowa for the New Mexico job.
I find this one funny since back in the day Bob Knight flirted with leaving IU for that very job.

it used to be tough to win in the "PIT"
Noone went in there and won, conference or non.
If i was Alford, i would go back to SMS, he had a nice run with the bears, and the springfield faithfull hate hinson, he's won, but they hate the guy!

There may not be an Iowa fan alive that isn't begging for this to happen but there is no way Steve would leave a Big-10 school to go coach at New Mexico. He'd take a huge paycut, and if he thinks it's hard to recruit at Iowa just wait until he goes down there. Unfortunately, our motto here in Iowa is and will continue to be "we're stuck with him and he's stuck with us!"
But Alf better get back to the tourney and probably even win a game in the Big Dance next year or it sounds like he's gonna be gone. Gary Barta has basically been saying that. New AD's want immediate results from their coaches. It's pretty simple......either go dancing in 2008 or get to packing!

did you know that Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa were going to be in the Sweet 16? that's what Jon said last year, and hey!....lookeee....all 3 will have new coaches next year.
Alford to NM and the "Pit".
i'm hearing it's a done deal.

and Iowa would be a year late to get McDermott....Altman or Turgeon would be the leaders IMO.

Gary Barta is the second coming of Bruce Van DeVelde.
He has done nothing. I guarantee he is wiping his brow for escaping that tough decision.
Please tell me who you have in mind for the Iowa job. Alford might have been the best the Hawkeyes could do.

i just hope Iowa doesn't gamble like UM did on Amacker...a guy with no HC experience.

With Alford going to UNM looking to be a done deal, we are now heavily going after Gregg Marshall of Winthrop.

^^^^^^
excellent coach and a great recruiter...I did my graduate (MBA) at Winthrop and had some players in my classes...they couldn't say enough about Marshall...
7 out of 9 years in the tourney...a lot of near misses and they finally won a game this year...not too mention some of their losses this year UNC, Sconsin, A&M and Maryland...wow...

The one thing that worries me is that Marshall is from SC, so it might be tough to get him to leave. Reports are stating that Winthrop is going to offer about $400,000 a year to stay while USF is looking to have a package with a salary about double what Winthrop is offering.
I'm just happy that it seems we are finally putting money into our basketball program. Being in the Big East has certainly brought USF more money, but we should have been spending it on improving our basketball program before now.

Props to USF if they can pull that off. He sounds like a quality hire.

I'm sure a rookie HC would ruin the best freshman in America not named Oden or Durant...ol' what's-his-name.

Yeah, Jon was giving Alford blowjobs a few months ago.....guess he's a little slow to figure out that Alford ain't all that. Who woulda thunk it.
Mace
to be fair, Jon's always been on the fence with regard Alford. that he likes to give blow jobs, that may be the case. i wouldn't know.

He loves him like a man loves a women who leaves without you having to ask her... or TELL her. You know? ...like in the butt. I wonder if this is going to make Jon a closet New Mexico fan. It'd be nice to bitch on him about two schools like we too Crown and his freaking cloned sperm running around here.

It looks like Gregg Marshall is not going to accept the offer to come to USF, so it's back to square one. This sucks.

I no longer have a hetero man-crush on Alford. I did 8 years ago, but that's gone. I'm sticking with Steve Spurrier and am contemplating adding Royals rookie 3rd baseman Alex Gordon to my list of man-crushes.
I'm not an Alford hater or supporter. I am just glad he's gone because I can't stand listening to the whining fans anymore. It's been a divided fan base the last 5 years but, finally, the family is now back together!!
Iowa can get a good coach, and will. We have the money to ante-up. I do not think Altman will be the choice. He is a MID-MAJOR coach and a MAJOR douchebag. He'll never be able to recruit.
My choices are Rick Majerus, Lon Kruger, Billy Gillespie, and Kevin Stallings. I think ALL of those are realistic choices. I don't really have a favorite in that bunch. I would have liked to have Tubby Smith, but Minnesota jumped at him before our job came open.
As for me rooting for New Mexico......I dunno. I'm kinda going back and forth on whether or not I will cheer for Alford. Either way, i'll definitely be paying close attention to what he does.
(sidenote: As I'm typing this up, on the news I just saw that a kid I played Little League with is being charged with a doucle murder. Nice!)
