I went to the local HEB supermarket to do some grocery shopping this morning. Among the things I bought were a six pack of chicken, spinach and feta brats and a six-pack of beer to cook the brats with.

When I got up to the checkstand, I was informed that they couldn't sell me the beer until Noon.

With policies like these, HEB should address their customers as "comrade" when they enter the store. Fuckers...

Most places that have Sunday blue laws simply lock the cooler doors when they can't sell booze. I'd raise hell with them over that.

Missouri did away with their blue laws about 20 years ago. Kansas, on the other hand, still has 'em. The only place you can buy booze on a Sunday is a state package liquor store or a club that serves food. Friggin' morons.

Still beats Arkansas, where every county in the north/central part of the state is a dry one. Makes for a thirsty canoe trip if you go unprepared. :brad:

Even when New York had them, they were tame in comparison to those of other locales. IIRC, New York only prohibited sale of beer before noon on Sunday. Many other places prohibited sales on Sunday altogether. True story: when I served in the Navy, I was stationed in Jacksonville, FL. I had just moved down there, it was a Sunday, the NFL playoffs were on, and I decided to pick up a six-pack. It's between noon and 1 p.m., so I figure I'm in the clear. I go into the store, and there's a big pole over the cooler doors so that you can't open them. I find this a little strange, but relatively easily remedied -- I merely remove the pole from the cooler door handles, open the door and grab a six-pack.

Clerk: What are you doing?
Me: I can buy beer. I'm 22, and it's past noon . . .
Clerk: It doesn't matter. We can't sell beer at all on Sundays.

A few years ago, there was a ballot initiative to do away with the liquor control commission. Oddly enough, before November rolled around, the ballot measure disappeared, but the OLCC suddenly rolled back what was left of the stupid laws, and bottle stores were open sundays (and since it's Oregon and somebody threatened the State Run Mafia, I assume the author of the initiative had one of those mysterious "hiking accidents" along the coast that seem to be so prevalent amongst people who try to rock the boat.)

Rhode Island didn't allow liquor stores to be open on Sunday for years. Now they are open from 12-6 on Sundays. Getting that allowed was like pulling teeth.

I think Pennsylvania has one of the strangest systems. You can buy beer at bars but outside of that you have to go to a beer distributor.

South Carolina bars are required to use nips as opposed to big bottles. So if you order a jack and coke they pour a full nip in each drink.

The weirdest state that I've seen is Minnesota. They have what are known as 3.2 bars there, that only serve beer with 3.2% alcohol, instead of the usual 4.5-5.0. If you're a 3.2 bar, you can only serve 3.2 beer (and pay lower taxes as a result), but the bonus is that all regular bars have to close on Sundays and 3.2 bars can be open all day.

The reason the HEB thing irked me a bit is that I don't believe we have blue laws in my county in Tejas. Then again, I don't drink or buy alcohol anymore, 'cept to cook with and to drink while cooking, so I can't say that I've ever tried to buy on a Sunday before. Oh well...live and learn...and tell HEB to FUCK OFF!

There was one dry town left in Oregon until a couple of years ago. Monmouth...which is pretty silly, since Monmouth is on one side of 99W, and Independence is on the other...and the grocery/convenience/liquor stores across the street flourished. So they finally repealed the law. To celebrate, the mayor threw a large kegger at his house...classic.

That depends...

If bars are still open on sundays, then not only are you taxing the sale of the booze, but they're now taxing the bars for the income from it, as well, not to mention the payroll taxes on the employees serving the booze...although I'm sure different laws and tax structures in different states affect this.

I'm in Greenville, SC at least once a quarter on business, and they do sell booze there, now.
What's funny though, is if you order liquor they only have the little single shot bottles like they have on a plane.
No 5ths - no free pour, it's all in those little bitty one shot bottles.

I ordered a Johnny Walker Black and water at the marriott last time - $8.50 and was thinking the price was fucked for nowhere, SC but then figured the added cost was due to having to buy and stock all those little bottles. It was Hilariously stupid.

CT has the most horrific alcohol blue laws, evah. And it don't have jack shit to do with christians. This state is as secular as they come, but, the liquor store owner mafia has deep ties that don't die easy. In CT, you may buy booze until 9 PM and not at all on sunday. That's right 9 fukking PM and zilch on sunday. Not even 3.2 watered down piss. And, you can't get it at a store with gas pumps, which pretty much takes all the convenience stores out of the game. You can get beer at grocery stores, but, wine and hard stuff only at packies. That's CT for liquor store, btw. I used that term on a buddy of mine from dcali while I was in the navy and he looked at me like I had 3 heads.

they can pile on all they want, the opinions that matter to me are the ones that belong to the parents of the kids on the team I coach. Just as if I was just a parent and not a coach, the coach of my kids team did what me and the other parents wished.

Generally the handshakes were after Tournament Title games, some tournaments shuttle the kids off to give them medals as soon as the game is over though

I just dont see shaking the opponents hand after the game as that important of a thing, thats all there is to it.

Back to the original subject, we can buy beer/wine at the local grocery store, but anything with over 20 proof must be bought at the state store and they are not open Sunday, most are open 10-7 or 10-9.

Also, no alcohol sales allowed on Xmas, Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, or any national or state election day.

Depends on the tourney, some of the tourneys have another game scheduled to start immediately after the last one ends so they hand the medals out to the team in a different are of the park where they have cameras and stuff set up. Try staying on the field after a game at a tourney at one of the Fields of Dreams facilities.
I wish they were all like the Elite WS was, the Disney facility was super nice and nothing was rushed.
