I can empathize, as I'm going through the same thing right now with my daughter. The silver lining in this cloud is that they grow out of it, eventually.

I went through the same thing with my son when he was younger. Finally, much to my delight, he's starting now to take an interest in sports.

I'm glad I didn't have you for a father, or that my father wasn't you (i.e., imposed his musical taste on me). If that had been the case, I would've been the nerd who listened to Frank Sinatra and Perry Como while everyone else listened to Led Zeppelin and Rush.

Everytime I'm tempted to push my own musical tastes on my kid, I think of that.

Uh, less pushing my musical tastes on my kid. I just thought it was cool that he asked for Ozzy, who I like quite a bit.

He generally likes to listen to "Octane" on Sirius (at age five ), which is harder music than I like. Sometimes I flip it there for him, unless they're playing some band that's lobbing f-bombs left and right.

My old man did his damndest to force his musical tastes on my sisters and I, and thankfully, I'm my own person or all I'd listen to would be Joan Baez, Roger Miller and the Beach Boys.

I swear, if I hear "...trailers for sale or rent, rooms to rent for fifty cents...no phone no pool no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes..." one more FUCKING time...!!! AAAAUUUGGGHHH!! AUUUGGGGGHHH!!!

There's plenty of hip-hop songs my kid likes where that's a problem. Fortunately, those are easy to identify. Sometimes, though, you have to listen to these songs from a kid's perspective rather than from your own. My son told me he got in trouble at school for singing "I'm in love with a stripper" -- pretty tame fare by my standards, but a bit too risque for an 8-year-old.

Fortunately, my kid recognizes, at least on some level, that I don't like the same music he does, and he appreciates the fact that I sometimes let him listen to it. There was this one rap song he used to like, until I commented that it sounded like Carlton from "Fresh Prince" trying to rap (he watches reruns on Nick at Nite sometimes). He listened to it and then agreed with me. Now he laughs whenever he hears that song.

I did the colouring-in page on the Hip-Hop Harry website. When I used red instead of blue, I got shot.
