How do you get Google to recognize your website?

They had a form on our host site to send to all the major search engines, after I submitted it, about half took it and half didn't.
Yahoo & Google didn't.
It's not like we expect a lot of search traffic, but if my wife gives the site name to someone, and for whatever reason they can't type it into their browser, it would be great if they could pull it up on yahoo or goog.
Any ideas?
TIA

Meta tags... Look into them. Also look into a meta tag generator. There's lot's of free ones around the net.
Also look into registering common misspellings of your URL and register them with the same DNS.

Already put those in -
But here's a question - I just put them on the home page.
Does it help if I put them on every page?
Thanks

No, don't put them on every page. That shit annoys search engines like Google and Yahoo, because 5 of your pages show up on the top searches it waters down their search function for everyone.
Plus, you don't want your back pages found first. Too confusing for users.
Google sends out 'bots to veify sites constantly, based a lot on searches done on that info, plus applications by legit companies.
DO NOT attempt to cheat your way on to Google, or they could black list you. If you try to do hundreds of searches on your own website over a month to boost interest, the 'bots will match up the ip, and they could dump you hard.
Just make sure your meta tags are clear, and are in the correct sequence, IE if you were a bank the first meta tag should not be "deposits".
Been traveling the last two days. Just got home so I'll see what you got going soon.

Figured out how to get Google to see us:
http://www.google.com/addurl/
It makes you put a metatag for them to verify it's really you.

We add and update new sites to our index each time we crawl the web, and we invite you to submit your URL here. We do not add all submitted URLs to our index, and we cannot make any predictions or guarantees about when or if they will appear.
That's about what I thought. They also rank sites according to searches, which they have no control over, thus the above disclaimer.
once you've submitted the URL, wait a week for it to cycle in and then do a search based on the order of your meta tags, find out where you rank and also WHAT the link says when it comes up.
Do this for all the main search engines. You need to see what others see when they are looking for you, and it helps to know if your tags are properly ordered and useful.
One mistake I fixed on a friends site (His idiot stepson did the site) was on his "employment opportunities" page. The kid put in the title section of that page" No jobs available" during development phase and never checked or changed it. Guess what showed up on the search engines.
ACME FUSE COMPANY - NO JOBS AVAILABLE.
REAL bright kid he had there.
