Jazzfest

First off, props to the dog-killin' Looziana lawyer who persuaded me to hang for an extra day in the Big Easy to experience Jazzfest. My only regret is that I couldn't stay longer.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival is held over two consecutive weekends (Fri-Sun) at the Fairgrounds, where there are about a dozen stages set up, with music and great food everywhere (I had the alligator pie and fried green tomatoes). Opening day of this year's fest was yesterday. There were 67 different shows there (some acts perform multiple times on different stages). I was staying downtown, and caught a shuttle bus to the fest. One of the bus lines that was providing shuttle service is called Hotard, so, naturally, I'm all

"Heh heh...he said 'tard.'"

After getting there, I saw the Nightcrawlers, a brass band that plays N'awlins jazz, perform a few tunes, then went to see some blues being played, before headin' over to the Gentilly Stage to see The Subdudes. Unfortunately, they were late getting started, so I only got to see a few minutes of their set, since I had to get over to the Acura Stage for Dr. John & Van Morrison. Dr. John is a cultural icon in NOLA, and put on a great show. But without a doubt, Van Morrison was the highlight of the day. It was the first time I've seen him, and he did not disappoint. Most of the songs he played had a blues/country sound to them, but his 10-piece band was first-rate, and everything had that swampy feel to it. He even did a spot-on impersonation of Louis Armstrong during one tune, and was joined on stage by Dr. John and his saxophonist, who was a member of Fats Domino's band for many years, and they played Fats' My Girl Josephine. Besides having that unmistakeable golden voice, Morrison's an accomplished sax player, and also played harmonica, acoustic guitar, and keyboards. I was about 30 yards from dead center of the stage, the weather was perfect, and I was standing next to

Today's acts include Rod Stewart, Norah Jones (who I saw here in DC last week), and Ludacris. Some of the other performers there this year are Steely Dan, ZZ Top, Harry Connick, Jr., Bonnie Raitt, Counting Crows, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Rivers, Allen Toussaint, John Mayer, and Better Than Ezra. Lucinda Williams and T-Bone Burnett played yesterday, but I didn't get a chance to them.

I'll definitely try to schedule another business trip next year to coincide with Jazzfest again. Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez!

Kurtwood Smith was at Jazzfest? No kidding?

No wonder New Orleans is having such a big problem with crime. Boddicker's in town.

I s'pose it's all about personal preference, but frankly, when I saw her last week, it was a snoozefest.

Jones was the music industry suck toy when she won 5 grammies a few years back for a CD that generated one charted song, and she's done nothing new or interesting before, or since. She's a marginal talent who either spread 'em for the right people or has an uncle on the inside.

Her dad is Ravi Shankar. Not sure how much that helped her on the business side, but it does account for the genetics on the music side. She's talented - I'm just not down with her style of music, unless I'm taking the elevator.

That last link leads to clips of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. I've been listening to a lot of their stuff lately (Super Sessions, Live At Fillmore East, Electric Flag, and Kooper's Rare & Well Done). Both are (or in Bloomfield's case, were) great musicians, and worked with many of the legends of rock & blues (Kooper founded Blood, Sweat & Tears, and plays the organ on Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone). Rent the video of Monterey Pop, and check out the Outtakes disc; it has a blues segment w/ Country Joe & The Fish doing Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine, Al Kooper (w/ Elvin Bishop on guitar) doing Wake Me, Shake Me, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band (also w/ Elvin Bishop) doing Drifting, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Electric Flag (Bloomfield, Nick Gravenites, Harvey Brooks, Buddy Miles, et al) playing Drinking Wine. Great music. I saw Kooper's band, The Rekooperators, late in '05, and they were outstanding.

Ya gotta love Dr. John, though. Dude always sounds like he just burned multiple fatties when he talks.

He was dressed more like the first pic you posted of him at Jazzfest. Dude was known more as a guitarist than a keyboardist in his early years, before he was exiled from N'awlins to LA as a result of drug busts. But then he became The Night Tripper, and the rest is history.

Fuck the Utah Jazz.

I was elated when Karl Malone retired without having won a ring. I can't stand/trust any n..igger who wears a cowboy hat and likes to drive an 18 wheeler for enjoyment.
