Kansas fan: what's the deal with Gooden's neck hair patch?

is there some reason for this? i've seen some dumb goatees and watching AI and Melo duel for the most intricate tight weave spiderweb afro-mullet since december here in Denver i've seen some dumb, working a little too hard type stuff......but Gooden's thing is goofball city.

is it religious or something? his grammaw died? what am i missing?

I watch Cavs games for larry hughes and nuggets games for Linus kleiza. The only thing I can think of is he got a bald head all around and needs something to keep his ever present headband from slipping.
