The drunken Latvian policemen, commanded by Herbert Cukurs, a famous former Latvian pilot who in 1933 flew over Africa and during the war was a German auxiliary police officer known as “The Butcher of Riga”, killed all the elderly Jews from the old people’s home.

What did you do, google it and click "I'm feeling lucky"? Don't know why they've got that guy listed as the "Butcher of Riga", but that's not the right answer...or at least he's not the famous Butcher of Riga.

Well, like Felix said it was made by Springfield arms. The MI Garand.

(My grandfather test fired the proto type while in the marines in the mid 30's I believe it was. While firing the rifle, one man would throw hands full of sand and another man would pour water into the action to try to jam the piece.)

Oh, you wanted the most famous Butcher?

Captain Eduard Roschmann

Better, or is there yet another butcher who's even more famous? If so, I'm going there to have him slice my T-bone steaks from now on.

Word. If anyone's got a right to be arrogant, it's his brother, considering he writes all of the music and most of the lyrics.

That may be correct, if there is a minimum # of attempts required. McNair's rating was 100.4 based on 400 attempts. Sage Rosenfels of Miami is credited with throwing six passes in two games, with a rating of 131.9. Gus Frerotte played in 16 games for the Vikes, but only threw 65 passes and had a rating of 118.1.

You can rest easy -- the Trivia Police have arrived.

To be all technical -- The M1 was designed and originally built by Springfoeld, but throughout WW2, was contracted out to several companies(as were 1911's, Jeeps, and a host of other war staples), among them were Winchester and H&R...I believe there were others, but those 2 jump to mind.

And "Garand" is a nickname. The weapon is called a Caliber .30 M1.

Oh, but back to the point of my post(like you didn't know already) -- if'n I'm not mistaken, there were more M1 Carbines issued than Garands. Completely different weapon.

The following description claims the rifle "was never referred to officially as the Garand". (This is for OCmike's records)

http://www.rt66.com/~korteng/SmallArms/m1rifle.html

Also Dins, the M1 was standard military issue for the Army and Marine Corp. The carbine was a lighter caliber weapon that wasn't likely to have had more copies during the war years manufactured as it wasn't a standard issue. Supporting troops carried the carbine.

However through the course of post war years, the carbine design has continued to be manufactured, even in smaller calibers.

Come on man, pull that Saving Private Ryan CD out.

The carbine was standard issue? The M1 was standard Army issue. Guess these clowns better re-write their article. They even start the damn thing wrong.

http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/ ... garand.htm

After Guadalcanal in 1943 the Marines traded the Springfield 03 bolt action for the M1 and the entire 2d Marine division carried the M1. The article mentions the Marines prefered the M1 over the carbine.

Over 4 million units by wars end and over 6 million when production ceased in 1957.

Since my knowledge gears are now turning -- some quick research shows that there were more Carbines produced, but large numbers of them were given to allies. It appears there's really no accurate record of how many Garands were issued as opposed to Carbines.

But if'n I'm not mistaken, virtually all Marines in the Pacific were issued Carbines...making it "standard issue." The various specialty models were never what could be called "standard issue," except for specialty units, for example the paratroopers got the folding stock model(forget what they called the specific model, but there was a name for it). As far as collectables go, there's few things that look cooler than a folding-stock M1.

Unfortunately for those slinging lead, the Garand was a cannon, and the Carbine was a pea-shooter, relatively speaking.
