Fate of Broncos' Kircus in flux
Fate of Broncos' Kircus in flux after arrest
DENVER (AP) — A year ago, David Kircus was the Denver Broncos' feel-good story, resuming his NFL career after spending a year away from football making sandwiches at a Subway.
Now, the reserve receiver's roster spot with the Broncos is in jeopardy following his arrest Monday on suspicion of second-degree assault. He allegedly got into an argument during a weekend party and hit a man in the face after being asked to leave.

Kircus was released on $6,000 bail and ordered to appear in court Tuesday, the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department said. If convicted, he could be sentenced to two to six years in prison.

His lawyer, Harvey Steinberg, and agent, Josh Wright, did not immediately return calls.

Coach Mike Shanahan said he wants to hear both sides of the story.

"Obviously, if he didn't handle himself the right way, he won't be with us," Shanahan said of the backup receiver and return specialist who joined the team last season.

Kircus had been invited to a party at a home in suburban Centennial, but early Sunday he got into a disagreement there with the woman who invited him, authorities said. The man who owned the home was struck in the face after repeatedly asking Kircus to leave, the sheriff's office said.

The man was left with broken facial bones and was treated at a hospital, Sheriff Grayson Robinson said. His condition and the extent of his injuries were not available and his name was not released.

The 27-year-old Kircus had nine receptions for a team-leading 20.8 yards-per-catch average and returned six punts for a 14.3-yard average last season.

Kircus met with Shanahan on Monday before heading to the sheriff's department to stand in a photo lineup while his teammates participated in passing camp. The coach didn't go into specifics of what Kircus told him but said it was "a much different story from obviously what came across from the other person."

"Let's wait for the due process to take care of itself and find out if he's guilty or not," Shanahan said. "If he's guilty, then he'll pay the penalty. If not, obviously, he'll be with us."

Kircus is the second Broncos receiver to run afoul of the law this offseason. Brandon Marshall was arrested in March on suspicion of domestic violence.

Nice swipe at GVSU, Screw. Don't lump Kircus in with anyone that has ever attended class up there.

I have no sympathy from this point forward for any pro athlete that attends a party or goes to a club...strip or night/dance. If you haven't learned from other athletes in the past that have gotten into lots of trouble while frequenting places like that and you turn around and get into trouble, it's your own damn fault. Figure out another way to have fun because people will bait you into doing something stupid or by nature, you will find trouble based on the people you surround yourself with.

I think you can be in the public eye and not get into compromising situations but when you attend a party or a club with alcohol or drugs are present or people with bad intentions are in attendance, something usually will happen. These players will never truly be victims in my eyes unless they are clearly framed of doing something they didn't. However, if they get involved with an assault case on another patron, they either were in the wrong place at the wrong time or they didn't use proper judgement and didn't walk away from a potential problem. Swallow your pride and avoid doing something stupid because you have more to lose than some nobody at a club or a party looking to piss off a millionaire athlete in order to get your name in the paper or get some money from them.

I was prepared to lay a scathing take on David Kircus.
Then I learned that the incident in question occurred at 3:20 a.m.
Bless his soul.

'The next big thing' was obviously on his way to his early morning off-season workout when he was baited and badgered.

Free David Kircus!!!

.... the vital cog.
