I'm as big as Yankee hater as there is, but a baseball fan has to give credit where it's due.

Jeter just passed Joe Dimaggio on the all-time Yanks hit list with like 2,215. That's some rarefied air he's breathing, and let's face it, he's a certified fuckin' gamer and almost a lock to reach the 3,000 hit plateau. (fucking idiots on ESPN already talking about 4,000 hits) I like the way he plays this game.

Nothing but respect, but I was rather surprised to see that no other Yankee has had 3,000 base hits. Gehrig had like 2,700 some and that's the best?

Chalk another mark up for George Brett.

He'll be 33 next month. At the rate he's going, he should get to 3,000 sometime in the late '10 or early '11 season.

I was going to say he's got a shot at being the youngest ever to 3,000, but he's actually about 2 years older than I thought he was.

That depends on what you mean by that question. There are 26 members of the 3,000 hit club. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/history/mileston ... thousand_h . Four of those members -- Paul Waner, Dave Winfield, Rickey Henderson and Wade Boggs -- played for the Yankees for a time, but none played for the Yankees for their entire career.

I believe Gehrig got more hits than any other player in a Yankee uniform, but he's not the all-time hit leader among players who played for the Yankees.

And that's not really terribly surprising, when you think about it. The Yankees have a long history of picking up useful spare parts for the stretch drive of a pennant race, and that history predates Steinbrenner.

Yeah Terry, I figured that much. I was referring to those players who had spent their entire career with the Yanks, as I'm sure Jeter will. Not many players do that nowadays (spend their entire career with one team), and it's another reason why I dig the guy.
