We liked the taste of it. Especially added with our sweep of Texas!

No argument from me on that take. The Sox took 3 of 4 from the Tigers two weeks ago and now they're locking up that potent Indian lineup. Beckett was a trendy pick for having a big comeback season and he comes off the DL and shutouts the Tribe last night.
I'm very impressed with the pitching staff the Sox have put together. I'd like to see the Tigers when they get Rogers and Zumaya back near the midway point in the season but right now, I think the Sox are the class of the AL from a pitching standpoint with a healthy Papelbon on the back end. The scary thing with them right now is that Ramirez is off to a slow start and Ortiz isn't have a huge start either. If they start lighting it up, look out.
My AL Power Poll:
1. Boston
2. Cleveland
3. Detroit
4. Los Angeles
5. Minnesota
6. Seattle
7. Chicago
8. Oakland
Where did those damn Yankees go?

Guys, the Yanks flat out suck right now. No pitching...well it's kind of there. Cano is having a terrible year, their starters are old and average, the middle relief is only a relief to the other team. Farnsworth and Proctor both suck ass. Rivera only has 3 saves and an ERA above 5.5. Clemens isn't going to help because he's only going to pitch 5-6 innings then they'll blow the lead. It does look like the Sox are going to run away with this whole thing and meet up with the Tigers for the ALCS but crazier things have happened so even though Yankee fan is on the bridge right now it may still be a little early to jump, but there's one foot in the air right now.

It might not be this year {I'm still not counting them out} but you can be assured that someday you will hate the Yankees even more than ever. And when that day comes that we get to wave that Championship in your faces again, we are going to flutter it in your noses and shoot warm gobs of messy enthusiam into your agape complaint boxes.
So prepare now. Get us excited with lots of boasting. Forget that you are our bitches so when the day comes for us to remind you, your squinting and squeeling will be that much more deliciuos.
Yeah, because spending FAR more $$$ than anybody else to BUY your championships is always fresh....

I'd like to RACK the real New York Yankee fans (No coincidence that these folks are from or have spent significant time in New York) who showed up in here to get thier teams back and give legitimate takes when they are at thier absolute lowest.
Lax and Todd, I honestly hope your guys come back around after the all-star break and melt the faggot ass chowds down en route to taking your division by the end of the season. That would be absolutely epic.

Paul you fucking idiot.
The last time whole "buying championships" line was fresh, there were two more towers up in NYC and I could bring nailclippers on a plane.
Not only that, your point even sounds more like the typical moron battle cry given the fact that the Yankees didn't really start widening the gap between 1 and 2 in payroll dollars AFTER their World Series run ended. They typically have had one of the largest payrolls, even before they started "buying" their championships with all those players from their farm system. Hell, they even got out-spent by Baltimore in 1998, their 114 win season.
Most of that era they had the top payroll in MLB, but there was someone right there with them almost dollar for dollar. The fact remains that they haven't won shit since they started trying to really "buy" WS titles, so unlike you Paul, your played out and baseless point doesn't hold water.
I don't really see it as "Buying" championships, as much as the yankees and the red sox competing for who will buy up more of the available talent to keep other teams from contending for the post season.
The post season is always a crap shoot for those that make it. Who ever is hot, usually rides that wave home. I am really tired of seeing the yankees in the post season every year. The only thing that has made it worthwhile is when they tank, but I'd prefer to see a little variety. Won't happen as long as King George uses cash as his determinant for making a team win it all.
That's been steinbrenners mistake. You can drive armored cars filled with cash around and buy up all the good talent that is out there, but if they don't come together and play as a team when it counts you've just spent a hell of a lot of money for nothing.

There is plenty of time left in the season. If I seem to recall, the Yankees were 5 games behind Boston last season at the All Star break and end up beinf 12 games ahead by the end of the season. The Yankees certainly aren't playing the way they should and they certainly won't make up 17 games like they did last season, but there is still plenty of ball left to be played. They MUST take 2 out of 3 in Boston this weekend.

Yeah... that ONE GAME they'd make up in the standings would be HUGE!
The Yanks can only get the Wild Card at this point, chooch. Even then, they are closer to having the worst record in the Major Leagues than they are Detroit.

Better to gain than lose at this point.
They have been further behind Boston with less games to play and still won the division, so anything is possible. In their current run of winning the division they have been behind by double digits a few times and still ended up winning.

The Sox haven't even started playing their best baseball yet. Manny, Ortiz, Lugo, Drew, and DiceK are performing below expectations. Lester will be called up soon to take the #5 slot. Becket was out for two weeks and they went 11-4.
Giambi is about to go on the DL and you have the whole A-Rod thing yet to be played out. After the Yanks get swept this weekend, Torre and Cashman will be fired and it'll be all over. Your myopia, errr, optomism is very refreshing though. Nothing like calling upon past seasons as a barometer. You know the difference between this year and last? Your team finally got old. Damon is done. Abreau is done. They both look 43, not 33. Riviera? Mussina? Done. Old. Your one young shining star, Hughes, went ahead and injured himself after pitching a gem. Your bullpen is done. Clemens is too much of a pussy to pitch in Beantown this weekend. I wonder what Suzan Waldman has to say about "The Rocket" now.
Want to talk history? From ESPN:
No team in history ever has been 14½ games out before June and come back to finish first.
Granted, they're down a mere 13.5 games today. So you got that going for you... which is nice.

It's scary how good the Sox could potentially be as the summer rolls on. If you were going to tell me Lowell and Youkilis would be the two leading hitters on the team as we enter June, I would've said...how far ahead are the Yankees in first place?

^^ Gets it.
I don't know what is more shocking... the Yankee collapse or the Sux playing .700 ball with many of their "star players" having below average seasons thus far.

True. Also, large chunk of that increase in salary came from huge contracts given out to players who were key players in their WS runs, like Jeter, Bernie and Rivera for example. To be fair, that "buying championship" money was more like paying for their past ones. That's nothing new. Teams that have spent a number of years at the top had bloated payrolls after their best years have past (Late 80's Royals, Early 90's A's, Mid 90's Blue Jays, etc).
Nobody "buys" championships, but that's not to say that they don't pay for them.
Everyone pays for their championships in some fashion. You don't see teams win with their 8 players in the field, 5-man rotation and a closer all from their own organization. The contenders in the league were all put together in different ways...trades, free agency or development through the farm system. Some do all three...some do just two.
I can't kill teams for spending money when I consider my team wouldn't be where they are at without Dombrowski making some bold moves in free agency but he's also made some of the best trades any GM has made in recent years. Of the Tigers' regular lineup...only Granderson and Inge are original Tigers. Monroe is a reject from the Rangers organization. Rodriguez and Ordonez were risky free agent signings at the time but both have worked out for the most part...Maggs is having an MVP-like season so far. Sheffield, Casey, Polanco and Guillen were all acquired in trades involving mid level prospects or throwaway players. Polanco-for-Urbina...that trade is almost a crime it's so good. (bad pun, I know)

It was deece. I'd currently rate it 3 machetes... and maybe 2 machetes + 1.5 blowtorches by year's end if Polanco keeps hitting the way he is.

Martinis are so yesterday. I'd rate that one 4 Josh Hancocks... or 3 Billie Martins + 1.5 Pelle Lindherghs.

Not looking too likely after tonight.
While you can all you want about the Sox underperforming, you can say the same thing about the Yankees, minus Jeter and Posada.

BIG difference between working magic within reasonable budgetary constraints and buying up talent while leaving the dollar amount on the check blank.

In fairness, I'd put A-Rod on that list as well. At this point his numbers project out to 58 HR's and 154 RBI's for the entire season.

A lot of Yankee haters like to bitch about this, but they always seem to forget that the last dominant edition of the Yankees had a lot of useful spare parts who were not superstars by any stretch of the imagination, nor were they paid as such. Without Tino Martinez, Paul O'Neill and Scott Brosius, the Yankees probably wouldn't have run off three straight World Series, or four in five years.

They got the 2 Wins they needed and it might have been 3 if Abreu wasn't such a pussy on Ortiz's fly ball on Saturday.

At this pace, they'll catch the Red Sox sometime next week.
Kidding, of course. It's nice to see the Yanks playing some good ball though. The bats have come back and the pitching has looked pretty damn good during this streak. Hopefully this is the new norm and not an exception.

The Yanks are playing well right now but they're also catching the Sox on cold stretch. Definitely easy to gain ground in the standings when one team can't lose and the other team can't win. Now the Yanks catch the Mets on a 5-game slide...

Dear god, Scotzie...while I know you fancy yourself quite the sports columnist, I simply have to ask...
Do you try to be this fucking stupid?
So, the Yanks are on a "hot stretch," whilw the Sux are on a "cold stretch"?
Uhm...did you happen to notice these respective stretches started about the time they played each other?
Did you happen to notice the D-Backs were on a "hot stretch"...until they played the Yanks?
Maybe in your next sleep-inducing "take," you can maybe incorporate the words "cause" and "æffect."
