Right about where they were when Weis took over. I wonder where they would be if they had another coach?

We won't be world beaters next season, but I'm not buying 47 either. If everything went according to form, that would translate to a 5-7 record next year.

In my opinion, there are 3 teams on next years schedule that have more talent than Notre Dame. Assuming ND is upset once and we do not upset anyone, the low end bar should be at 8-4. That is what a truly excellent coach would be able to muster. We should expect no less from Weis.

I don't disagree, although I might set the low end of the bar at 7-5 (including both UCLA and Fredo as potential losses.) My point in mentioning a 5-7 record was to counter the ranking of ND. Seven of our opponents next season are ranked higher than we are. If we pulled off no upsets and were not upset ourselves, that would give us a 5-7 record, if those rankings are valid. I don't think they are.

The next time any preseason rankings are "valid" will be the first.

Bullshit. The day the pollsters come to their senses and make KAL the preseason #1, they will then achieve validity.

Last year's Kal/Tennessee game decided the true champ for the next few years. Surely the UrineUnis will contend in 2012, though.

And the rest of the poll? We're arguing #47 here.

I'm digging this. As a fan of the Phil Steele magazine that likes to read-up on a lot of different teams I think this is a fine idea.

I have faith in Turner Gill, I think he'll get Buffalo above the bottom. They made movement in the right direction last season while pushing younger guys, with most starters back they should be improved. The showdown with fellow cellar-dweller Temple will be key.

UTEP at 105? Maybe Price should've moved-on when his named had gotten some heat again.

New Mexico State should be fun to watch if you can find a game of theirs on tv, possibly surpassing Taco Tech and Hawaii for the biggest air-show in football.

If Neb can finish at #14 I'll piss myself.

FSU at 31 and Miami at 34? That gives me a warm feeling inside.

Me too. New coaches and zero people outside of FSU thinking the noles are worth a damn....I like it.

FLA Atlantic only at 113?

a couple years ago Howard the Schnellenberger was on ESPN radio at the Kentucky Derby (smashed) talking about how BCS teams were afraid to play the Owls and how FAU would soon be building a bigtime multi-sports venue "like the Carrier Dome".....while (Louisville homer) Bob Valvano was tickling his nut sack.

Still chaps my hide how he has built a career over one lucky win where Neb could've just played the percentages, taken the tie, and taken the MNC.

As far as FSU and Miami go and I really dig Miami being unranked, can't stand them fuckers. FSU I just get a little giggle out-of, the same giggle folks got when Neb fell from glory. I think FSU should have a decent year with their recent coaching-changes.

Pitt at #33 is a laugher. Why? They'll be weaker than they were last year. Seeing them above Miami and USF makes me guffaw.

Far be it from me to defend Goldtooph or anything associated with that program, but it's a bit of a stretch to say that Schnellenberger "built a career" on that one game. He's been involved in coaching at the college or pro level since before I was born, and I'm 42. He helped recruit Joe Namath to 'Bama. He was an assistant on the Dolphins team that went undefeated. And he was a NFL head coach, with the Baltimore Colts, a good decade or so before that game was played. http://fausports.cstv.com/sports/m-foot ... ard00.html

If it makes you feel better, I have no doubt that it "chaps his hide" that others came along at Louisville and Oklahoma, and even Goldtooph, after he did and had more success there than he did. But give credit where it is due. He built Goldtooph's program basically from scratch. They wouldn't have had the success they had in later years without his work at the beginning.

Goldtooph's record from 1946 (first year at major college level) to 1978 (last year before Schnellenberger): 173-161-6.
Goldtooph's record from 1979 to present: 267-69.

Quite a difference. And Goldtooph's record from 1979 to present may very well be the best in 1-A over that time period. If not, it's almost certainly in the top 5.
