c'mon, fellas. anyone heard the new interpol yet? I haven't. just wondering what people thought.

in a major fucking coup, since grand rapids only brings to town mainstream commerical acts, interpol is playing grand rapids at the end of the month. since i'll be home that weekend, i'll definitely be at the show.

grand rapids is a fucking shitty music town. yeah, it's nice that all the huge acts come through. it was nice seeing the best pearl jam show i've ever seen in GR and they could have kenny chesney play van andel seven nights in a row and they'd all sell out (maybe that's just indicative of the collective IQ of music fans in west michigan) but an indie band of the magnitude of fucking belle and sebastian could play a venue and only half the place would fill up. for GR to pull a band like interpol with no guarantee of anyone showing up is pretty impressive. i hope they have a good showing so other bands follow suit.

actually, i'd much rather have them playing south bend, but whatever. if you like old, retread classic rock bands (styx, deep purple, doobies, reo, BOC) then SB is your place. fuck me.

S_M -- glad I don't have that problem around here. Hell, the indies come to town to play fairly small clubs, on occasion. Hell, this summer, the Decemberists are playing on the lawn next to the golf course that's at my all-time favorite bar(and would be yours too, if you'd been there...they have a golf course, for chrissakes...not to mention a brewery, winery, and distillery, hotel, several restaurants, and some other cool shit...it's quite a fucking bar...dozens of acres worth). Lynard Skynard is playing there, too. And a bunch of other acts you've heard of.

i have a couple interpol boots that are pretty average, to be honest. but, my cousin saw them in Dallas maybe a year ago and said they were great.

i'd be interested in knowing which boots you are talking about. of course, the quality of any bootleg is going to vary tremendously for various reasons. for example: mgo saw them at michigan theatre a couple years ago and i got him the boot for that show. the band was good but the recording wasn't very good. it would be worth listening to for nostalgia purposes only.

on the other hand, the 11-07-02 l'antipode, rennes, france interpol bootleg is the definitive bootleg of the band: soundboard recording (i.e. almost perfect), the band rips through all the songs with great speed, they play specialist, song seven, the new, ob 1, ob 2, leif, pda all in one show. i have all my interpol boots at home, but the boot from lyon, france in 04 is awesome as well.

you're probably referring to how you view the band in general. that's fine. like many bands, interpol is not everyone's cup of tea.

but you really can't go wrong with interpol live. i really don't go on my rustbelt tours to see one band multiple times in one tour anymore, but when i saw interpol three times in six months in 04-05, it was worth every cent. i just wish i would have seen them on the bright lights tour.

oh and dins, that's cool and all, but top this: the decemberists are playing with the grant park symphony orchestra at millenium park in chicago on wed 7/18. FOR FREE. i'd love to see portland pull that shit.

and no one's heard the new interpol yet? that's really what i wanted to know.

ive heard it on sirius and on world soccer daily, they are big interpol fans.

quality is partly the issue. i like interpol, it's not that. they just aren't great boots. Bright Lights got me through a commute to south Denver this last academic year. one of them is Berlin, Maria am Ufer, 9/16/2004. i looked for a little while for the other (not on my HD) but i'm that eager to complete the task.

Here and there, a few bands have played Pioneer Square for free. I remember quite a few years ago, Candlebox just kinda showed up out of the blue and played a lunchtime show.


But as a general rule, you're right...that won't happen in Portland. See, round these parts, we charge everyone at least a couple of bucks(and a couple of cans of food), and use to money to feed the hungry, or to fund the Special Olympics.


I paid $5 when I saw the Decemberists and Violent Femmes. I could afford it, so it really wasn't an issue. The $4 beers just about put me in the poorhouse after I ordered #438 of the day, but I was cool with the gate.

Very clean and tight live show from these guys. Definitely worth the money if they roll through your town. $30 for a show is considered steep to me, but to you top 40 radio arena rock/classic rock types, that'll seem like the deal of a lifetime.
