Vista - DOS Print Issue

I recently setup a two computer network (with Vista) for my in-laws who run a doctors office. The medical tracking/billing software they use is called raintree and their version runs out of DOS.

I have no problems printing a web page or word document w/ the new setup but I cannot print from the DOS application. I googled it and found mixed results but nothing solid. It essentially comes down to DOS is looking for an LPT1 printer port but the new computers only have USB connections. I bought a Parallel to USB cord to connect their older printer to the system but I don't really know how to address this issue.

I know Vista is new so over time solutions might be made available but as it stands right now I am lost. Any ideas?

You should probably contact the software company for some answers. There are some software (yes Dos based) that only talk to very specific type of printers.

You might try using the net command (under the command prompt) to set up printer port to a local LPT port. In other words, share your printer, then using the Add printer wizard or the net use command, create a link to an LPT port and the software may work.

here is an Article on it from MS:

Good luck!
