surely, you have seen this on yer home boards. but this is kind of disgusting to me. what does "being clreared by the NCAA to enroll" mean? i'm sure i was cleared by the NCAA when i applied to a PhD program at Cornell and got denied. should i start bitching? Is it wrong that a school have autonomy over admissions that aren't governed by the football program?
no offense, but USC isn't exactly Michigan or Virginia as per the great public institutions in our great America. everyone compromises standards, apparently. that Spurrier is calling attention to it at his place and gets the capitulation, is dumb. and scary.
Spurrier: S. Carolina will revise admissions
Associated Press
Friday, August 10, 2007
COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina football coach Steve Spurrier said
Thursday he is positive university officials will revise the
admissions process for athletes to his satisfaction.
Last weekend, Spurrier said the process left him embarrassed and
angry after two of his recruits were denied admission to the
university despite being cleared by the NCAA to enroll.
In response, the school has created a committee that includes
president Andrew Sorensen, athletic director Eric Hyman, professors,
coaches and other administrators to discuss the university's special
admissions process for athletes.
Over the weekend, Spurrier threatened to leave South Carolina if
things didn't change. He seemed much more optimistic Thursday.
"I feel positive President Sorensen and the university
administrators will revise our recruiting process to where we're all
satisfied and we can eagerly and enthusiastically go about our
business in recruiting," Spurrier said in a statement

KC is frigging SoCar? Spurrier is hamstung enough having to rtecruit to that shithole as it is without having to worry about players being denied entry after being cleared by the NCAA and offered a schollie.

i work in higher education. i'm tired of seeing the free pass.
it's more a question of choosing NOT to do the work at the high school level. and at college, today's athletic dept. tutoring systems push the limit of plagiarism and academic misconduct. if you can't make a "c" in grade inflation college today, you are going out of your way not to.
i don't think there is anyway that Spurrier is right that the university re-writes it's admission policies for football. the political economy of football, great. but you can't compromise the institution for the "old ball coach".

Well I don't work in higher education like you KC and I only know what I have read in the press on the matter but is seems like the board of regents or academic admissions has really hamstrung Steve and made him look a fool to local kids in recruiting in what is already a very difficult place to recruit to.
I defer to you opinion on the matter though as you have a lot better basis of knowledge to come to a conclusion on the matter than I.

i could be having a "holier than thou" moment and need to check myself. and i know this is a football first board, that's why i'm here.....not to yak about admissions or soap box out.
but i've seen situations where the double standard for athletes once in school is patently unfair to the rest of the student body--for instance, in the cases of the university not prosecuting cut and dry cases of academic misconduct....where other students would by the terms of the Honor Code be facing expulsion.
that's the last thing i'll say. i think as some level, we all understand that these things do happen, but seeing it up close it's much harder to justify.
