Ocean City report.

We're back. It was a blast.
The drive down was sheer hell, thanks to Pennsyltucky's non-stop construction and the crappiest highway designs I have ever seen. Ever. The people in charge of roads and traffic near Philly should be beaten and shot. We decided to get the hell away from our original path and wound up going through the delightful city of Chester. What a frigging cesspool. The city smelled like urine and was filled with shacks in which the locals displayed their stained mattresses on their porches. Periodically, we saw police having chats with some of the fine, upstanding young men of Chester (just seeing if they were interested in joining a mentoring program or some other such thing, I assume...).
Delaware, OTOH, was beautiful.
By the time we got to Ocean City, it was 12 hours later (have I mentioned how much I hate Pennsyltucky?). We got to our beach house, which was a new build in a "gated" community (actually there was no gate, just some dudes at a booth that checked to see if you had a permit to enter the area). The house was four stories. Air-conditioned. Nice. Everything we pretty much needed to get to was within walking distance.
First night there, we ordered pizza and wings from what was reported to be (by the local paper) to be the "best" pizza in Ocean City. The pizza sucked - sauce was too sweet, crust too thick...but then again, I'm a pizza snob (thin crust NYC-style for me). The wings were frigging abysmal. That was a constant theme - I tried wings in about four places, and they ALL sucked. Let's get this straight, Maryland: BUFFALO WINGS ARE
DEEP FRIED (not baked or parboiled),
NEVER, EVER BREADED, and the sauce is basically just Frank's Hot Sauce, vinegar, and butter.
On to happier stuff...
The weather was awesome - high 90's and up all week (it hit 104°F one day). We were at the pool and/or beach every day, in addition to whatever orchestrated family stuff was set up for the day. Each family took turns making dinner. My wife and I made pulled pork for the first time and it came out great (I just wasn't expecting the "roadkill" appearance of the meat prior to the shredding of the meat).
On Monday, the dads took the oldest sons (all age

flounder fishing on a charter boat. None of the flounders were big enough to be "keepers," but watching the kids' reactions to catching flounders, sea bass, croakers, starfish, and one scary-ass and pissed-off spider crab was great. By the way, flounders are ugly frigging fish.
On Tuesday, the wives had surf lessons. Props to them - they got slammed by the boards and waves and did OK, but wound up with some serious bruises. Some of the hits they took looked damned painful. They were glad they did it but said they'll stick to wakeboarding.
Wednesday was the birthday of myself and one of the other guys, so we got a sitter (provided by the complex's nanny service) and went to Castaway's for dinner. Good food and service. My wife handed me a gift my folks bought for me and sent via her - a Steve Tasker replica jersey. Nice. My folks and my wife got tired of me using birthday and holiday $$$ on practical stuff for work or the house, so they got me something that they knew I'd never buy myself.
On Friday, we took a "nature cruise" over to Assateague Island to check out the wild horses and marine life. That was freaking cool, especially when they sent us off the boat with nets to collect specimens. I snagged some hermit crabs, a clam, and a croaker, and the kids snagged various bivalves. The guides (marine bio grad students from UNC) passed around some jarred live specimens of other marine life (to be released at day's end). I thought my two-year-old was going to have an aneurysm when the horseshoe crab was brought around. Scared the shit out of him.
On the whole, it was a great time. Props to Maryland for their hospitality. Nice people, even if they can't make decent wings.

Mike,
Nobody knows how to make Buffalo wings outside Upstate. I remember my wife ordering some in PA and they gave her RANCH dressing. It wasn't pretty. But then again, at least they didn't bread the damn things.
As I recall, the seafood in Maryland was top notch. Maybe they looked at the wings and thought they were crab cakes?

Bri - you're right about the wing thing. Ranch dressing on wings is just wrong (and is just a cheap substitute for bleu cheese), and there is absolutely NO excuse for breading "Buffalo" wings. None. I've gotten great NYC-style pizza outside of NYC and some decent Buffalo wings outside of Buffalo (in Virginia, of all places), but Ocean City's wings were just heinous.
One of the weirdest things about the trip was the large number of eastern European chicks (all nice looking, btw). Our waitress at Castaways was from Slovakia, the waitress at the pool was from the Ukraine, and the various cashiers at the stores had names like "Sashka" and 'Natasha." There's probably some reason for it, but I honestly didn't feel like prying.
Neely - all the photos we took were of friends and family. I wasn't into landscape/nature photos.

Virginia actually does have some decent wings, except in NOVA. There are wing places up here that are absolutely horrible. If you are away from home, you might try just limiting your wings exposure to Buffalo Wild Wings.

I can think of about five decent joints offhand that serve wings 'round here in my neck, and ALL are vastly different from each other. All very good too. I don't think there's one type of wing that can be associated with the entire state of Michigan.

having spent 800 plus miles on PA's interstates in the last month, all I can say is ahmen, brotha. pennsyltucky's interstates are hands down, the worst anywhere. it's not even close. what is really shamful is that even the fukking turnpike is horrible. they ought to give us money at the toll plaza for subjecting us to such shit. as for the rundown shithole towns, you know they gotta be bad when CNYer runs town smack on you. And the sad thing is, smalltown pennsyltucky jusy might be even shittier than CNYville. Imagine somebody from utica rolling through there thinking, damn, this town looks like ass.
Delaware, OTOH, was beautiful.
chicken farms are beautiful? I guess you didn't get stuck behind a chicken truck on 13. almost as bad as driving through PA.

flounder arm indeed but ugly on the end of a line, but, they look/taste pretty damn good on a plate with a little garlic, butah and lemon juice.

Then you found yourself an idiot Ukrainian, Mike(that's OK... so did my best friend, so he married her).
Here's the deal... I know more Ukrainians than you'll ever meet. I interact with them almost every day. Some who have lived here a long time (I have no idea why the Portland/Spuncouver area is the destination for former commies, but there's staggering numbers of them).
And every single time I've heard the phrase "THE Ukraine" used, it's been corrected by a Ukrainian. Every time.
So, here we have one of those "who to believe" debates -- two blubbering dweebs on a messageboard, or a whole pile of living, breathing Ukrainians?
HMMM.... tough call.
Here's the deal -- I'm right, and you're wrong. Bet on it.
Although... I'm sure we can all agree that Ukraine and Russia churn out some hot ass bitches.

I think that the best arbiter of these types of arguments (no, not wikipedia) comes down on the side of Dinsdale.
New scene.
Kramer and Newman are on a subway car, the Risk board sits on their laps.
Newman: Are you sure you know where the impound yard is?
Kramer: Oh, stop stalling. Come on.
Newman: I can't think, there's all this noise.
Kramer: Or is it because I've built a stronghold around Greenland? I've driven
you out of Western Europe and I've left you teetering on the brink of complete
annihilation.
Newman: I'm not beaten yet. I still have armies in the Ukraine.
This comment perks up the ears of what appears to be a Russian immigrant.
Kramer: Ha ha, the Ukraine. Do you know what the Ukraine is? It's a sitting
duck. A road apple, Newman. The Ukraine is weak. It's feeble. I think it's
time to put the hurt on the Ukraine.
Ukrainian: I come from Ukraine. You not say Ukraine weak.
Kramer: Yeah, well we're playing a game here, pal.
Ukrainian: Ukraine is game to you?! Howbout I take your little board and smash
it!!
The Ukrainian pounds the game board, destroying it and sending army pieces
flying.
BTW, Dins, I spent Saturday afternoon at the best beer festival in the world (it says so right here:
http://www.mhtg.org/links_page.html). Sampled many fine Midwest microbrews. Eat your fucking heart out, U & L.

Dinsdale wrote:Ukrainians will correct you on this. Not as quickly as when you call them Russian, but they'll still correct you.
I informed you that the individual to whom we were speaking was from that region and herself used the very phrase you claimed they would correct, and your reply is:
Dinsdale wrote:Then you found yourself an idiot Ukrainian, Mike
Nice job. If the individual that disproves your statement exists, she MUST be an idiot. [golf claps]
BTW, going to the "I know more Ukrainians than you" card is pretty goofy, since you have absolutely
NO idea how many Ukranians I know. None. Nada. Zip.
By the way (part 2) ...my father-in-law's mother is right from THE Ukraine, which means I frigging married into a family of them. I even have the "delightful" decorated eggs handed down to my wife sitting in a cabinet in our dining room. By the way, my in-laws refer to that region as "the Ukraine" also.
Bottom line: not all Ukrainians are as militant about whether or not to use "the" in front of "Ukraine" as you claim.
Dinsdale wrote:So, here we have one of those "who to believe" debates -- two blubbering dweebs on a messageboard, or a whole pile of living, breathing Ukrainians?
I wasn't aware that the Ukrainians had made you their official message boy. Until such time as a whole mass of Ukrainians -or even one, for that matter- corrects me, I'll stand pat.
I'll also be awaiting similar corrections from whole piles of folks from the Netherlands and the Dominican Republic.
Dinsdale wrote:Although... I'm sure we can all agree that Ukraine and Russia churn out some hot ass bitches.

That is common down in OC and Rehobeth. These assholes bring these students over form the Eastern Block- put them 10-15 in a house and work them to death all summer. The students do it b/c they'll make more money over here than there. Main problem is they never get what they are promised when they come over= but they have to work all summer in order to get the money to go back home.

Actually, the field trip was great for a bio geek like me. My background being molecular bio, I'm always interested in learning stuff about the bio areas in which I'm not as well-read, like marine biology.
One of the bits that the guides told us featured ospreys. They mate for life but spend 8 months of the year apart from each other (in South America). Each year, they come up north to the same breeding area. The male carefully builds their nest. The female arrives a bit later...and completely rearranges the nest.
I also dug learning about horseshoe crabs. I hadn't realized that because of their unique copper-based blood and immune system, we use their blood to screen blood products and use a filtered version of their blood for MRI imaging in folks allergic to the usual MRI visualization dyes. Funky creatures. If I had a marine aquarium, I'd buy some, since they cost like $5 at science supply places.
What
I found funny was that near Assateague island was...
Assawoman Island.
jim:
- No, we didn't go
through Philly, we went NEAR it, which was bad enough. I had more than enough of Philly when I had to attend bimonthly AXP executive board meetings at Drexel and/or UP for three years. I'm sure that Philly has very nice areas and a lot to offer (especially to 18th century American history wonks like me), but the area around Drexel/UP was a frigging mess. Those three years soured me on visiting the city, at least for a while.
- As far as the pizza recommendation, you've got to be kidding me if you think that we'd conduct exhaustive interviews and research outside of local media in order to determine which pizza to order, especially after 12 frigging hours in a car with two kids. Besides, the place from which we ordered (Nino's, Pepino's,..something ending in "ino's") had apparently won some local "Best Pizza" contest and the locals with whom we spoke during the week seemed stunned that we NYers thought their hallowed pizza and "Buffalo" wing source was shit. Worst wings I've ever had. Ever.

yeah, I guess I should hang out in nice places like niagra falls.
Upstate might have a few nice little towns, mostly college towns which don't need actual industry to survive. The factory towns died long ago when companies got tired of NY state leaning on them, so they moved south or just closed up shop.

That is not true. The portion of I-90 that crosses the northwest portion of PA is in pretty good shape. And I-79 from Erie to Pittsburgh ain't too bad either. It's I-80, I-81 and I-76 that give PA its bad name.

Rt. 22 - the main lifeline between Pittsburgh and State College - is an infernal miasma. FOr years, they have had it torn up from start to finish. PennDOT is horrifically inept, or corrupt, or certainly both. PA lies athwart points N, E, S, and W - and as a result deserves more fed road money - but they squander it like nobody's fucking biz.

In CA you got union wages any time you worked a county or state road job. I'm sure it's the same in Pennsylvania. Back when I did road construction for the summer before I went to college, I got $25/hour to stand there with a slow/stop sign for 12 hours. I'm sure it pays a hell of a lot more than that now.
Whenever any road work is being done, it's usually one or two guys working and four guys standing around watching them work. It burns my ass knowing what they're getting paid (my tax dollars hard at work) to stand there and burn heaters and talk about the fat chicks they nailed the night before. :brad:
