So there is an article on MythTV distros that are available, doing some comparisons and testing. The one that most of us have tried with some luck is KnoppMyth, but with the 2 additional distros, hopefully this suit will get some more use.

Fucked up 2nd PC
a second PC that was already giving me problems (would freeze up at completely random times, at least 1x a day) is now continually resetting and not able to load windows when I turn it on. I attempted a full reinstall of windows, that's not working. I even attempted a reformat of C and I got a prompt saying it failed.
Is this thing even worth salvaging? It was meant to be used for my kids for learning how to use the computer/mouse etc..

Most likely a power supply going bad. Possibly RAM has gone bad.jiminphilly wrote:a second PC that was already giving me problems (would freeze up at completely random times, at least 1x a day) is now continually resetting and not able to load windows when I turn it on. Download MEMTEST86+.
Burn the ISO file on a known, working computer with the burning program of your choice (if you use NERO and you need instructions on how to burn an ISO, let me know). Boot up the disk in the problem computer and run the diagnostic tests.
That way you can rule out RAM as being the problem.

Could be many things. Could be heat issues, a problem piece of equipment, HD problems, etc. The memory testing is a good idea. You can also download other testing CDs that will test other parts. If you have spare parts, you can also replace the stuff in your system with those and see if any of them fix the problem. You could try a Live CD to rule out the windows install itself and even the HD. The random reboots and such kind of remind me of bad memory or bad mobo.
If you have some decent parts, you may want to find a good deal on tiger direct for a barebone system with cpu/memory and move over the other parts. Might save $100 or so over a full system from Dell.

I gave up on it.. I had a spare Dell with a slightly less processor and smaller HD lying around. I just need to increase the RAM but it'll work just fine. The other unit will be spare parts (DVD-RW, 256MB Graphics Card and the Dell needs a new fan so I think I can swap out parts from each).
Assuming I find a processor that works with my MoBo.. how do you upgrade the processor?
