Small wonder none other than one John Henry Bonham idolized Buddy Rich. You can hear Moby Dick all over that. Good stuff.

Two of the all-time greatest jazz drummers, Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich, do battle here:

19-yr-old Mike Shrieve (youngest performer at Woodstock) does his thang here:

Buddy Rich pwns drumming, more than any single musician pwns his respective instrument.

He is the greatest that ever lived. It's really not even open to debate.

Smackie, you might get a kick out this - ever heard of Sandy Nelson? He was a Californian drummer from the late Fifties, early Sixties who put out a few memorable singles, 'Teen Beat', 'Let There Be Drums' and resume of session work as long as your arm.

There's a series of short interviews made by a neighbour of his on a camcorder on YouTube. His chum just asked him questions and there's some great anecdotes on Cozy Cole, Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa - it's interesting if you like the topic. Great in that it wasn't made for television.

Never heard of him, Doc, but that's some good stuff. Would be even better if Nelson could actually remember and pronounce the names of the drummers to whom he refers. Some of what he discusses in the YouTube clip you linked is mentioned here, too. Seems that Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa were members of a mutual admiration society.

Watch the west side story youtube clip. I'd like to be able to do a two handed roll as sweet as his single left hand. And that single stroke two handed roll is just insane.

As I may have said earlier in this thread, I can't think of another instrument where one dude is the undisputed king. You can argue about guitarists, paco de lucia is my personal pick, but when it comes to the skins, there just isn't any debate.

During that show with sinatra you can see that he is about to pass out from being sick. He is a tire, sick, exhausted 65 year old who looks 75....but he is STILL the best drummer on the planet.

As peart and many others have said, there are really good drummers and then there's buddy. Dude is in his own category.

fucking incredible. the thing that amazes m most is the total lack of movement with their bodies at the shoulder level. They do all that shit with their fingers

watch all of the buddy rich youtube clips. find one single fukking mishit. you can't. actually, there is the time he accidentally hits one of the mics hanging above one of the cymbals in the 1970 WSS clip. Dude looks up at the mic like he is gonna kill it, but just keeps going.

His crossover fills are just fukking mindboggling. Makes bonzo look like he's playing in slow motion.
