Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The most common measure of obesity is the body mass index or BMI. A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9; a person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30.

"Morbid obesity" means that a person is either 50%-100% over normal weight, more than 100 pounds over normal weight, has a BMI of 40 or higher, or is sufficiently overweight to severely interfere with health or normal function.

and then there are body types...(somatotypes).

Sheldon’s “somatotypes” and their (presumed and supposed) associated psychological traits can be summarised as follows:

Ectomorphic body type is characterized by long arms and legs and a short upper body and narrow shoulders, and supposedly have a higher proportion of nervous tissue. They also have long and thin muscles. Ectomorphs usually have a very low fat storage; therefore they are usually referred to as slim.

Mesomorphic body type is characterized by a high rate of muscle growth and a higher proportion of muscular tissue. They have large bones, solid torso combined with low fat levels. It is also noted that they have wide shoulders with a narrow waist.

Endomorphic body type is characterized by an increased amount of fat storage, due to having a larger number of fat cells than the average person, as well as higher proportion of digestive tissue. They have a wide waist and a large bone structure.

OK, one more time:

You cannot get an accurate idea of BMI by plugging in your weight and height into some online calculator. Period. End of story. These tools cannot account for the amount of fat mass and non-fat mass in your body. Probably the best way to get these measurements are by doing a hydrostatic weight test, which can be performed at many universities or sports medicine clinics. Only a morbidly obese person might get some kind of accurate representation out of these calculators, and really, if you're morbidly obese, do you need a website to tell you?

BMI is an absolute measure. So you can get your BMI through a website calculator. What you can't get through a website calculator is an accurate representation of your body fat percentage. Which is a far more important indicator.
