Late thoughts on the NU/USC game

My feeling about the game has gone back and forth in the last 24 hours or so. At times, I feel very confident. Other times, I feel like I'm going to be disappointed.

For example, Roger Craig was on the radio and he felt very confident about NU's chances. Then another former Husker, Damon Benning (who grew up a USC fan), gets on the radio and admits that USC's depth will ultimately overtake NU.

Osborne's old DC, Charlie McBride, was on the radio with some other wisdom. He said that it'd be wrong to put some much importance on a game because if they're all tight, then they're going to play tight and make mistakes. You want a team to have fun. He also talked about how his best defenses weren't necessarily the ones that had the most talent. They were just the ones that played with great team chemistry.

Then I hear how much Carroll wants this game. I read reports that say that he's been pretty intense this week. So then I wonder if that's a good or bad sign. On one hand, he could be so intense that his team is too wound up and play bad. On the other hand, he may have them so well prepared that we're in for a long night.

So now I don't know what to think. My head is having a battle with my heart right now. The heart has been wrong a few times, but it's been right a lot more times than you would think.

I can point to many games that NU was supposed to lose badly or had no chance in.

1993 - FSU game. FSU is favored by 17.5, NU loses by 2.
1994 - CU game. NU is not favored against a talented CU team. NU wins 24-7
1995 - Miami game. NU is definitely not favored against a Warren Sapp led defense on their home field. They win.
1996 - Florida game. Much of the media picks Florida. NU trounces Florida.
2001 - OU game. OU is supposed to win easily. NU wins.
2006 - Texas game. NU is supposed to struggle against Texas, but lose by 2 in a heartbreaking fashion.
Granted, I can also point to other games in recent history where NU is favored to lose and do so in a big way, so there's that.

Some other thoughts. NU is 5-0 when ESPN gameday comes to town.

In other news, USC practices at noon at Omaha Westside High on the field turf fields. Pete Carroll gets pissed when fans that caught wind of it surround the edges of the school while they practice. Supposedly one of their coaches calls our fans "rednecks", which is pretty ironic considering that it didn't come from Callahan's mouth.

It should be a good game. People will be drinking and tailgating starting in the morning. If that doesn't get the place bouncing, nothing else will. It's supposed to be in the low 50s, which is what southern Californians would consider 'cold', but is just fall weather to us.

Yes, I'm rambling. It's late.

i'd disagree that OU was supposed to win easily at NU in 01. OU was ranked #2 and NU #3, in Lincoln. OU was having QB issues after Nate Hybl got beat up against KSU and UT....and then White suffered the first of his knee injuries in the first quarter of that game. the latter doesn't have anything to do with the game expectations but OU had one of the most inexperienced OL's i've ever seen and NU was certainly able to exploit that. and weak OL play and consequent VERY conservative playcalling were the earmark of the rest of the season for OU.

it was a good, well-played defensive football game that NU was able to break open with the famous riverboat gambler Frank Solich throw-back play to E. Crouch.

i think NU can hang around and with some opportunism take the game into the 4th quarter....and then, it's on. but, misfortune early could be dangerous USC can score in bunches.

I'm almost positive UF was an underdog as well vs the greatest team of all-time.

Heard a radio hack say he was near enough to hear the comment. Said it was directed at some smart ass highschooler so it's to be understood. Also heard he had a colorful comment for the Trojans. Not a big deal and I'm sure Large was making comment more as he (we) would expect Callahan doing the same thing early on in his tenure. (He has learned his lesson, NU fans don't take kindly their coach calling out opponent's fans. That's our job.)

Anyway if he did make the comment, he ain't all wrong. I lived here all my life and we do have our share of "good 'ol boys."

Large, we've lived the same life and the feeling is spot on with me. I can't talk shit that we will do this or that cuz we could get our ass handed to us or we could be happy as a pig in mud about 10 o'clock tonight. (That's a redneck sayin' SoCal fan.)

I'll HOPE for the latter, but I can't justify it to be possible. Crowd, a few SC mistakes, NU none, a defensive or special teams TD, or a trick play that goes to the house.. well that's wishful at best. We have to be able to run. If Callahan starts throwing the ball all over the joint, SC will laugh all the way back to LA. Losing Murtha will hurt big time.

Might be the reason you heard such commentary....but I'm just guessing.

I'm a Nebraska native and am now in Iowa. Not a huge Husker fan while there, but did follow them. Fans got kinda' annoying sometimes. However, living in Iowa, I have had a little Husker withdrawal. Therefore, I'm a bit geeked about this game. Gotta say.

GO BIG RED!!!!

Oh there is no place like Nebraska.....

There's a little paranoia in all of us, even USC.

The college football program that operates smoothly under the Hollywood spotlight got a bit spooked Friday afternoon at Westside High School.

The No. 1-ranked Trojans, conducting a final practice in preparation for today's 7 p.m. clash with 14th-ranked Nebraska at Memorial Stadium, were forced to call an audible when a couple hundred NU fans infringed on their privacy.

The University of Southern California began its one-hour workout at Phelps Field, in plain view of the assembled throng of fans who had caught word of the USC presence. Omaha police and school officials failed to disperse the crowd to the liking of coach Pete Carroll.

So the Trojans packed up and moved — to the adjacent Westside baseball field, behind the football grandstand and hidden from view.

"I was just impressed again by Nebraska's following," Carroll said after the practice.

USC typically closes its practices on Fridays, when Carroll and his assistants take the Trojans through their script of first-quarter offensive plays. Other practices are open to the public, regularly creating a circus-like atmosphere.

For a few minutes Friday, it was a circus in Omaha. As the crowd refused to move from outside the fence around the football stadium, one USC coach grew upset and called a group of NU fans "rednecks," according to observers.

"We were all like, 'Whoa, did he just say that?'" said 19-year-old Alex Post, a University of Nebraska at Omaha student who came to watch the Trojans practice.

USC chose to practice at Westside because of its modern facilities and proximity to the Omaha Marriott, the team's hotel. Both the Westside football and baseball fields are covered with FieldTurf, the same surface as Memorial Stadium.

Westside Athletic Director Bob Reznicek said he first heard from USC officials last spring. Dennis Slutak, the Trojans' football operations director, confirmed last month that the team would practice at the school. He asked Reznicek to keep it secret.

"I told him we'd do our best," Reznicek said. "We did OK until (Thursday)." News of the practice leaked. And once it hit the Internet, it was too late.
