Recommendations please, from a fan of late-80s/early 90s stuff, namely,

Johnny Gill (self-titled album)
Frankie Beverly and Maize (borderline jazz, but nonetheless)
After 7/Babyface
Bobby Brown (self-titled album)

Here's the deal: I dig on the keyboards and electric guitar in much of that music, big-time.

I'm a big fan of the early Prince stuff too -- the whole "Minneapolis sound" if anyone knows what I mean.

Anybody have any recommendations? Or am I wasting my time trying to find something that doesn't exist today?

the first two The Time cds,the third one Ice Cream Castle(the title song is nails) isn't too bad,but it doesn't have the two geniuses Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis as their producing career was flying off.

there ws also 2 instrumental albums by a band called Madhouse,which was on Paisley Park worth seeking as well.

another worth seeking out:
the former guitarist for The Time had 2 solo cds as well.

i wouldn't consider early prince r and b, more on the funk/rock fusion side

rack. I freaking love the Time. still ain't late 80's/early 90's. R&B started sucking right about then.

That'd be Jesse Johnson. Used to have some of his stuff on vinyl, rever replaced it with CDs though.

btw also check out Andre Cymone,who had 3 solo cds,but is best known for working with the delectable Jody Watley,especially on her debut solo effort.

For a few more conventional choices, RIYL R&B, look for collections by:
Gap Band
Lakeside
The Whispers
... just to name a few.

Gap Band ain't all that.
Lakeside had three good tunes.

As for Lakeside, three is a lot more than most other bands have in a career! :P
