The Pads have won 6 in a row, though against inferior teams. They finish with one more today against the Butt Pirates, then three at home against the Rockies, three at SF and four in Milwaukee. They way they're playing now (the walk-off last night was epoch) I wouldn't be surprised if they won 8 or 9 of their last 11. I wouldn't be surprised if they lost 8 or 9 either.

But they are in real good shape because they're 1 behind the Snakes, tied with the Mets and 2 1/2 ahead of the Phillies. They only have to finish ahead of one of those teams to at least make the post season. The Rockies, Dodgers, Braves and Brewers are still technically alive, but I don't expect any of them to make a real run at the WC (Brews could catch the Cubbies though). The Rockies only real chance is to sweep the Padres on the road.

I could be wrong about this, but I don't see any way the Brewers can wind up in contention for the wildcard. Either they win the NL Central or they miss the playoffs altogether.

Should the Brewers beat the Padres in the season's final series, the likely beneficiary from the standpoint of the wildcard will be the Phillies.

I doubt any team in the NL wants to play the Philles right now.. they own the Mets and they have a pitching staff including bullpen no where close to the talent level of the Mets.


I am routing for the Diamondbacks to lose at this point b/c the Padres are on just as much a hot streak as the Phillies.

Right now, it looks like you've got four teams competing for three playoff spots (Diamondbacks, Mets, Padres and Phillies for NL East, NL West and wildcard), and the Cubs and Brewers competing for the NL Central title. You might be able to throw in the Rockies in the first category as well, since they're almost as hot as the Padres, but they have an awful lot of ground to make up.

In 1964 the Phillies had the same monumental collapse the Mets are on the verge of having. It'll be nice to see another team go through that- even better that the Philles beat the snot out of the Mets the last series that they have played them.

The Padres looked dead in the water two days ago after losing 4 straight. All of a sudden they seem to be back in it - even with the 4 losses they've won 9 of 13. I hope Prince doesn't fuck us over in the final reg season series, and the Rockies are going to have to lose a game somewhere, sometime.

...and the Mets continue to fall. Anyone else enjoying this?
