Or consumers simply choose not to consume their products. In which case they lose out to other companies that operate more efficiently.
Rack capitalism.

I think they're kinda pissed that the US didn't buy into the scam. If I was a CC-Trader, I'd probably be disapponited, too... since Americans have become so lazy that it only follows that they'd want to start paying Asians to produce their CO2 for them, too.
BTW -- RACK the Yaquis Medicine Co. If we can get you to pay $150 for a pair of sneakers, we can get you to bucky up $0.50 for a bottle of rattlesnake oil (which I'm sure is made from the finest U&L timber rattlers, and not those inferior diamondbacks).

Global warming might allow us to grow oranges or maybe even sugarcane here in Mayberry. I'm going to buy a piece of land down near Myer's Lake just in case. I thank you for the head's up Mr.88.
Sure, smog and smoggers are plenty bad, but when the smoggiest of the smogites wend their way to war, watch out! These piggies want YOU! They want you buyin', lyin', sighin', and most of all dyin' http://toxicjunction.com/get.asp?i=V3460

What is it about companies responding to market and cost pressures that you don't get? Or was that the only way you could work your old guys in garbage bags fetish into this thread?

market pressures are fine. "cost" pressures are as well, when those costs are normal unavoidable costs. this cost is a completely artificial bullshit tax that has nothing to do with actual costs.

Yup. The nasty NOx emissions they test your car for and whatsuch are mono-nitrogen oxides... which are what you get when you burn hydrocarbons. You don't get dinitrogen compounds from simple combustion.
I may not be a former chemist from Ohio, but even I know that vehicular smog is a combination of NOx, some sort of hydrocarbon-based VOCs, and sunlight.
