I, too, am getting pissed about this. I'm all for "icing" the kicker. This is a new low though.

There's talk of players on field are only ones who can call TO on FG. Course, the same thing will happen there. Soon as the center drops his head to look back, TO is called.

I think a TO in a FG can be called by anyone on the field or the coach. However, once the play clock is below 8, the defense can ONLY call TO if a player goes in motion. This allows the defense plenty of time to "ice" the kicker as well as plenty of time for the offense to not have to kick, set up and rekick.

Imagine the instance where a kick is made, fields are rushed and then had to be cleared because some dumbfuck coach wants to play a little mind game.

So, there is one more caveat to this. The clock winding down kick. Simple. When under 30 seconds and the clock ticking, defense can't call TO once the line is set and center touches the ball unless a player goes in motion.

This is now the new craze, and every fan watching knows it can't continue .... except, apparently, league ballwasher/officiating guru Mike Pereira.
So the league has to do something NOW, ..... immediately.
It's become a Mickey Mouse deal.

My guess is they will continue to let coaches call timeout THIS YEAR, but they will somehow insist upon coaches calling the timeout earlier than they've been allowing.

I say letting players only call timeouts is the solution.
That is how it was up until they changed the rule two years ago to allow coaches to call them.
When a player -- on a FG attempt -- calls the timeout, an official very near all the players will blow the whistle and the players will hear it.
The play won't continue, .... except for maybe a stray player or two.

The problem with coaches calling the timeout is that an offical WAY over on the sideline is the one blowing the whistle, and the players don't hear it.

Can't wait to hear M. Pereira's take on this latest debacle.

It may be legal, but it's a douchebag move. If the timeout was called to move players in and out it would be fine, but just to see if you can fuck a guy over on his kick? To me, it's poor sportsmanship. I can't wait for the first assbreath to try that move and the kicker misses the first one, and then thanks to the jackass timeout nails the second one to drop an "L" on the coach.

Mike Pereira's job is to make sure his refs enforce the rules as written, not to propose new rules in mid season. Nor is it Pereira's job to point out that calling a timeout that close to the snap is a douche move. Even if it is.

I can't remember a time where ANY rule was changed during the season. Maybe someone can enlighten me. I wasn't proposing it being changed midseason. Rather, just getting some thoughts out there for now.

Anyone who defends this "tactic" is a douche as well. And I hope the Titans NEVER benefit or are harmed by such tactic. I'd hate for my team to win like that.

By the way, I would not expect ANY NFL coach to call that tactic unclassy or bush league. Otherwise, it is a card that they can't play later without being criticized. So no one bring coach's opinions in on this. Just as A-Rod's bush leagure "HA!" is an unwritten rule, this should be too...until it is written for next year. Pandora's box is already open though so it is fair game for the rest of the year.

Get over it. Use your 3 timeouts as you wish. Are we going to have a rule in place for the offense running up against the play clock that calls a timeout? Nope. Are we going to not allow a timeout late in the game when the QB of a winning team is playing grab ass with the ref until 1 second is left on the play clock and calls for the timeout? Nope.

While we are at it, let's abolish the delayed blitz. It's just not fair go after the QB unless you rush him when the ball is snapped. Fuckin pussies.

i'd love for teh kicking team to pull an okie doke and purposefully miss the FG, then the other teams thinks they won only to have to line up again. i know we'll never see a coach tell someone to miss on purpose as a joke and waste time outs like that, but i still would laugh.

Difference is, Cueball, is that all of those scenarios take place on the field. I don't see why it would be so hard to implement making the timeout call be made by the back judge prior to the snap. pretty simple, and nobody shits their pants about it. If you can't whistle the play dead before the snap within a reasonable distance of the action on the field, and provide adequate notification to the players, you get no timeout. Whistling 30 yards away from the play at the split second the ball is hiked hardly qualifies as adequate.

So the side judge is not allowed to blow his whistle except if he's pretending to juggle a ball when ruling an incomplete pass? By bad, his other job is to look for the red flag that gets thrown late because the coaching staff has to decide whether or not to challenge a play. I'm sure a timeout has never been called from 30 yards away when the QB is trying to get a play called and isn't keeping an eye on the play clock like I said earlier. The same people bitching now will be the same people bitching if a player on the field waits until that last second. Either way, the fragile little kicker gets a free practice kick.

On the Raider v. Mule debacle he claimed that the offical was 'all the way out to the numbers' waving his arms and blowing his whistle, while the freaking video showed that the offical was BARELY off the sideline when the ball was snapped.

In the Denver game, and now again last night, players executed a game-winning play.
It's obvious that NOBODY on the field of play could hear that whistle ...... blown from the sideline.

You can't have players execute a game-winning play and then come in and tell them it didn't count.

And now this mickey mouse practice has become routine.

And the league officiating spokesman has said it's all kosher.
