PUT THE GOD DAMNED PHONE DOWN COACH

Looks like Kelvin Sampson learned nothing from his sanctions due to phone calls at OU, as he's back to his old tricks again. IU self imposing loss of scholly for next year, additional recruiting limitations and a 500K fine on Sampson. Really don't know what to think/say right now. I've got a shit load of stuff going on right now so I'll be back in a few days with clearer thoughts, just figured I'd break the bad news here.

i posted it before i post it again. my dad, who is a lawyer who has been close to the U of Oklahoma and it's AD and legal apparatus for 30 years said it wasn't so much the infractions that fucked OU with the NCAA but Kelvin's "unrepentant" attitude about it*. that got him in trouble with OU's AD. if what my pops says is true....Kelvin was not EVER gonna get another raise at OU minus winning the whole thing.....and was politely asked to get another job. David Boren is a lot of things, good and bad....but he doesn't like being embarrassed.
i liked Kelvin, and he was always nice to my mom....who could care less about OU basketball.
*edit--he told me this at least a couple months before the NCAA made a decision. he said word for word, "Kelvin won't admit contrition, and the NCAA is going to bury a hatchet in us". this was at a dinner at Denver's venerable Blue Bonnet Mexican restaurant when he was in Denver for a USGA rules seminar.
if you wanna search, i bet it's there.

isnt there a ZERO tollerance policy for him at Indiana?
seems ot me he's already broke the code. and coaches need to be held accountable. NCAA needs to suspend these guys for a year after so many violations. Why should program suffer as they bolt for greener pastures????

Fuck me running, but there was always something fishy with Sampson.
Indiana, get rid of him as soon as possible, there are reasons OU had people kicked off the team almost every year.

what is it about choking a girl that leads to problems?

Remember KS was at Wazzu before Oklahoma, and he left some talented players behind when he left. When Kevin Eastman (the straighest of arrows) tried coaching em up however, one was subsequently kicked off the team (Shaman Antrum), two had attitudes and quit (Kareem Anderson and Tavaras Mack), and one of them got suspended a game his senior year for shoplifting of all things, deodorant (Carlos Daniel.) Of course Eastman couldn't recruit anything to fill the void, and neither could his successor, Paul Graham, so Wazzu hoops was lifeless for a decade until the Bennetts arrived. Eastman and Graham get most of the blame for the ineptitude, and deservadly so, but maybe if so many of KS' players weren't headcases maybe the program could've endured his departure.

I totally forgot about that guy! He played one year at Wazzu then went to Oklahoma with a JC stop in between. I THINK his first year at WSU was the year immediately after KS left. No doubt he was recruited there by KS.
EDIT: Nope just checked it, his frosh year was Kelvin's final at WSU. That was before I was at WSU so I really don't know much about him. Headcase I take it?

Alright, I've had plenty of time now to get over my initial anger and fully digest all the particulars. Not that anyone cares but I'm ready to weigh in on the topic now.
Bob Knight felt many of the rules the NCAA had were stupid/hypocritical/pointless/duplicitous/insert negative adjective and would speak out about that quite often. Despite his feelings though he would follow the rules because they were the rules. Kelvin Sampson felt the phone call rule was stupid and thus chose to ignore it, thereby breaking the rules. In most respects I agree with Coach Sampson that the rules regarding recruit contact are moronic BUT if you choose to disregard them you have to expect consequences. So for what he did at OU he was punished.
Despite his prior issues with compliance IU chose to hire him as head basketball coach. Doesn't matter if they should or should not have hired him the fact is they DID hire him. Bringing him in the phone call issue was a known commodity though and because of that a percentage of the IU fanbase did not approve of the hire. So on a go forward basis the two parties involved SHOULD have known without any question that the issue simply could not take place again. Sampson should have known, despite his feelings on the rule, that he had to be 100% compliant with that (and all) NCAA rules. IU in hiring a guy with a history should have known their compliance office had to be extra diligent in monitoring the activities of the basketball staff.
Yet what happens, Sampson and his staff get sloppy with the rules and the IU compliance staff nearly doesn't catch it. It was an intern that caught the problem. To me that is inexcusable by both parties. Sampson is too smart to have made such a silly mistake and the IU administration (which doesn't have a strong track record) was far too lax in their monitoring of the situation. Very displeased.
That said, the transgression is pretty minor. The only infraction Sampson has direct involvement with is participating in 10 3 way phone calls. Those calls are NOT against the NCAA rules but rather were off limits because of the sanctions imposed on Sampson. Apparently the wording on those types of call was unclear to the point that IU contacted the NCAA for further clarification so they could know what to report in their findings. The other 35 calls were from the assistant coaches, but Samspon as head man of the staff is ultimately responsible for their conduct. Again ALL parties involved should have known that every i needed dotted and every t needed crossed, there was no margin for error. Skirting the phone call rule could easily be done through multiple means so I don't sense any deliberate attempt to cheat in these actions, simply inexcusable sloppiness on the part of Sampson, his staff and the IU administration.
I still like Sampson and the overall direction he has the IU program headed in. But I am beyond tired of having to defend and rationalize the man leading my alma mater. I did it for a long time, for much different reasons, with Bob Knight and I was looking forward to not having to do that again. But as I've mentioned before I see A LOT of Bob Knight in Kelvin Sampson, but coming from me that is a compliment!!! That sense of stubbornness to a fault is one of the main similarities I see in the two men. Refusal to change behaviors is ultimately the reason Bob Knight isn't at IU anymore and if Kelvin Samspon goes down that same path he won't be at IU for too much longer either. Most of the IU fanbase is willing to look past this latest incident but even one future tiny oversight when it comes to NCAA rules will have the masses calling for his departure.
There should have been no room for screw ups upon his hire but there is absolutely none now. Again I feel there was more incompetence involved here than willful disdain for the rules (like his OU transgressions) so I'm willing to get past my unhappiness and move forward. I just hope all future talk about IU basketball pertains to the on court stuff.

A&M, while looking average at best, is still tied for 1st in the XII south. I don't expect to win another game the rest of the year, but stranger things have happened.

"He" wasn't the only one. OU lost a scholarship, and suffered the majority of the penalty for what "he" did.
i wouldn't get too married to the "oversight" or "sloppy" mistake line of argumentation.

Just to be 100% clear, what he did at OU was deliberate and calculated. I'm just of the opinion that on the heels of that and with the spotlight on him at IU the violations this time were due to sloppiness. And yes, I have a vested interest in believing that to be true!!!

More developments on this story. IU assistant Rob Senderhoff, the man guilty of the vast majority of the calls and who initiated the 3 ways calls with Sampson, will be "resigning" tomorrow. He's "resigning" about the same way that Mike Davis "resigned". The official report should be available as to exactly what violations took place. Word is the NCAA will make their ruling within the next couple of weeks.

Better than being in the bottom of the pack in the Special Olympics.
Sin,
Big 11 isn't any better than the XII

This year for football the Big 10 is the worst major conference in the land.

No, the ACC has something to say about that.
