You'd think we build fucking nukes with all the security crap they put on our laptops.
The worst is if there's no activity for 10 minutes the system goes stand by.
This is fine if I was a cube dweller, but working from home or hotel it's just a pain in the ass.
The worst part is I can't charge the ipod or blackberry overnight.

Anyone have a program or that will simulate a mouse moving so my system won't go stand by?

Can you just adjust it in the POWER SAVINGS tab and set it to NEVER OFF?

...or whatever other atrocity Microsoft would have you do?

Are you prompted to enter a password or something?

Try this maybe?

Windows:

1. Go to Start > Control Panel and click on Power Options.
2. On the Power Schemes tab, select Home/Office Desk in the Power Schemes drop-down box.
3. In the box labeled System standby, select Never.
4. Click OK to save your changes.

Nope - alreadt tried it - admin has it blocked through windows

Yep. that's the world of corporate laptops. Not sure about Scott, but where I work, we go through a couple of months a year where someone in our network operations team gets a bug up their ass and revokes everybody's admin privileges. That lasts about as long as it takes the junior level netops guys to realize that they're being called for every stinking software update.

When it happens to me, I just start leaving my laptop at work. If my boss asks me why, I tell him I will not attach a machine to my home network that I cannot admin. Since he supports me, and not our Nazi admins, I've never had a problem with it.

Being new to this company, I'm not ready to pick a fight over admin privlages.

The basic line is the IT rules apply to everyone - even those of us working from home/ road.

Right now just trying to get a work around for this annoying thing - actually it's worse than annoying.

Seems like you have a solid, logical case for changes to be authorized. Have you tried submitting a request?

Get one of those constant tapping devices that Homer used to just hit enter over and over.

Of course, his use of this tactic did, in fact, cause a nuclear meltdown in Springfield so you might want to be careful.

You don't need to pick a fight over admin privileges. Just make a point of pointing out (in a very nice PC kinda way) every single stinkin time you have to involve your IT department to do things you should have been able to do yourself if they just treated you like an adult.

Laptops tend to be treated a little more loosly in terms of admin privileges because even something as simple as changing network settings (which can happen quite often on a laptop) requires Admin settings. Most companies who require people to take their laptops home for example realize this and play nice because of it. When I ran the IT department at the last job, I gave laptop users local admin rights but not on PCs. Even at this job, where we have enterprise remote admin tools, including log-me-in, we still allow local admin rights.

at our work the laptops do the same thing. but i have heard that if you play a CD, the computer wont go to sleep..

at least it works here.
