You had guys like Samsonov and Stefan play in the IHL before they were drafted. Samsonov played with the Vipers when they were an independent team and Stefan played with the Thunder and I don't think they were ever affiliated with another team. I don't know what was the circumstances around then when they were prospects. Both were European players though. There must be different rules for European players.
