just how the hell does a state with an economy like haiti's scrape together enough money to even buy uniforms, never mind field what just could end up being the best team in college football?

South Florida. And in fairness, South Florida did have the #2 ranking, for about 15 minutes or so this season.

They're not there yet. They still have to beat Pitt next week.
They should be substantial favorites, but you can never take anything for granted this season, least of all in a rivalry game.

Dunno. Maybe you want to ask Alabama. Granted, they haven't done it much recently, but they used to do it on a regular basis.

bama may have been poor back in the day, but, they were still in a fairly large state with lots of homegrown talent and a legend of a coach. west by god virginny has about 12 residents, most of which have all they can do to get a decent meal a few days a week. i suspect they draw pretty well from nearby pennsyltucky which has been known to produce a fair football player or three.

I don't think anyone has held onto it for very long...shoot, #1 teams haven't had a lot of shelf-life either. Missouri and West Virginia, the new #1 and #2, still have a game to play...we can still have another loss out of those two spots.

I would say WV is #1 right now. Their D is good, the most they have given up all season is 31. How many teams can say that?
We know what their O can do. Pitt may give them a tussle but I don't think WV will screw the pooch. But stranger things have happened this season.

WVU has always successfully recruited good talent... not upper echelon material, but pretty respectable. This goes back to Nehlen, a guy who never received the credit he deserved for pullin' the talent into a shithole like WV. I still don't know how he did it,but he did. Now, I don't mean to imply that Rodriguez is riding Nehlen's coat tails.. he's not entirely. RR can recruit, and he does. But I'd have ahard time believing that if Nehlen didn't build up the recruiting like he did, RR would not have WVU in the position he's had them in for the past 4 or so years.
Secondly, WVU does pull talent from Western PA, a region rife w/HS talent. Granted, not quite like Texas or parts south, but Western PA definitely produces considerable, good HS talent.

WVU is willing to put up with players elite schools would never tolerate. See Chris Henry and Pacman out front.

I'm guessing that is part of ND's woes. They are an elite school and are probably not as likely to completely look the other way academically or record wise. The ginormous state schools on the other hand could give two fukks.

Since you asked I know USC can say that. Nebraska is the only team to score 31 on them, and 21 of those came after SC called off the dogs when the outcome was no longer in doubt.
I'm sure there might be a few others.
No way Pitt beats WV though.
