I got it from the network.

Stu Nahan, dead at 81.
Larry Stewart of the Los Angeles Times wrote:Stu Nahan, a onetime minor-league hockey goalie who delivered sports reports on Los Angeles television and radio for decades, died Wednesday. He was 81.

Nahan had battled lymphoma, a form of cancer, since being diagnosed in January 2006.

In 1968, Nahan began doing nightly sports reports on KABC Channel 7. He moved to KNBC Channel 4 in 1977 and to KTLA Channel 5 in 1988, retiring from television in 1999.

Nahan also appeared in a number of movies and television episodes. After landing a bit part in the 1971 TV movie "Brian's Song," he had a string of movie appearances as a sports commentator, most notably in Sylvester Stallone's series of "Rocky" films.

He also played himself in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1982), interviewing the character Jeff Spicoli -- played by Sean Penn -- in a dream sequence.

Nahan was also a radio sports talk show host at KABC-AM (790) and most recently worked on Dodger pre- and postgame radio shows on KFWB-AM (980).

A native of Los Angeles, Nahan moved at age 2 with his mother to Canada, where he grew up playing hockey.

A star goalie at McGill College in Montreal, he signed a contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League in 1946. He was assigned to the minor-league Los Angeles Monarchs, who through the early 1950s played at the Pan Pacific Auditorium in the mid-Wilshire district.

When the Monarchs folded in 1952, so did Nahan's pro hockey career -- which, he admitted, wasn't a promising one.

"The real reason I quit was because I had a terrific sunburn on the back of my neck, which I got because the red light was on most of the time I was in the net," he would quip about the signal for a goal scored in hockey.

He found work driving a delivery truck, and one day in 1954 he came across Bob Kelley, a prominent sports announcer who was the original voice of the National Football League's L.A. Rams.

Kelley, recalling Nahan's gift of gab when he was playing for the Monarchs, offered to teach him the broadcasting business.

Nahan worked as a go-fer for Kelley during broadcasts of the Pacific Coast League's Los Angeles Angels, who played at the old Wrigley Field at 42nd Street and Avalon Boulevard.

"I kept the stats and got coffee and every once in awhile I'd get to broadcast an inning," Nahan recalled in an interview with former Times columnist John Hall in 1980. "The first year, I worked for nothing. The next season I got $50 a week. I had it made. I got special assignments driving visiting clubs to the ballpark. I'd bus the team to the park, do my radio work and then drive the team back to the hotel."

In 1956, Nahan landed a play-by-play job on radio with the minor league Modesto Reds. In December of that year he happened to see the first newscast of a new Sacramento television station. Nahan called the station the next day to complain about the sports segment and ended up getting his first job doing nightly TV sports reports on KCRA, an NBC affiliate.

While in Sacramento he was also the host of a children's TV program, appearing as "Skipper Stu." He would show cartoons while piloting his boat, the Channel Tender, accompanied by an octopus puppet, O.U. Squid.

Nahan later moved to Philadelphia to host a children's show as "Captain Philadelphia" on now-defunct WKBS. He also did play-by-play for the Flyers hockey team and Eagles pro football team.

In 1968 Nahan returned to Los Angeles and began doing sports reports at Channel 7. Nine years later he moved to Channel 4 to replace Ross Porter, who left the station to become a play-by-play announcer for the Dodgers.

In 1986, Channel 4 chose to not renew Nahan's contract, and Fred Roggin became the station's lead sportscaster.

Nahan landed a job doing sports on the KABC radio morning show, "Ken and Bob Company." The next year he replaced Bud Furillo on the afternoon "Sportstalk" show while continuing his role on "Ken and Bob."

In 1988 Nahan was hired at Channel 5 to replace Keith Olbermann, who left for KCBS Channel 2. Nahan for awhile continued with his radio work as well.

By September 1997, Nahan's role at Channel 5 was reduced to periodic commentaries and occasional assignments, and a few months later Tony Hernandez was hired to replace Nahan as the station's main sportscaster.

In 1999, Nahan was dismissed altogether.

He twice served as the president of the Southern California Sports Broadcasters organization, first in 1990 and '91 and then continually from 1996 on.

Nahan's survivors include his wife, Sandy, and four children from a previous marriage.

My wife would see Stu at work very often. What a great guy. She went to work tonight and everyone there was in a somber mood because they all loved Stu. I had the pleasure of meeting him a a few functions through my wife's work. Stu, you will be missed.

I'm no autograph hound, but I did get Stu (and Bill Buckner) to sign for me at the first Dodgers game I attended back in '72. As far as local sports newscasters go, Stu was one of the better ones I've seen. Not too dorky, and not too much of a homer.

Oh, dear.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, dear.

You know what this means, right Bitchice?

I mean, you DO remember the rules YOU made, right?

You just laid down the biggest KYOA in internet history, which I'm SURE you'll cop to, since you outlined these rules so clearly for us in the past...

right?

I mean, YOUR FUCKING RULES, right?

I really can't believe how badly you just KYOA, and by default, the rest of us PWN! you, as well... YOUR FUCKING RULES... remember?

Or is it only KYOA if you're unfamiliar with the various works of Bea Arthur, rather than a defining movie of an entire generation?

In light of the recent Chuck Norris thread, couldn't KYOA be considered, like, a good thing? As in, "<Insert poster's name here> is so fast, he can run around the world and kick his own ass!"

No, no.., hardly at all.

He must have picked up the nickname, "Shill Nahan" for some other reason

I spent all but about 10 of my years in SoCal and have never heard that nickname used. But I'm sure if anyone can, you can C&P a reference.

I've seen plenty of local sports hacks in a number of different markets, including the ones here in DC, and most are far bigger homers than Nahan was. Not saying he was completely impartial - it is local news, after all - but he wasn't nearly as bad as most.

Then again, far be it from me to argue with you about being a shill. ('sup, Biggie?)

No, I don't recall my time as emperor, but go right ahead and link me to the rules I made.

Nice try there, Cliffy. Yep I saw the movie about 8-10 years ago, but I didn't really bother to memorize the cast and all the quotes therein. Thanks for googling it for me though.

Shocker you have total recall on a movie featuring a brain fried pot smoker.

The one thing I do remember from that movie was the shot of Phoebe Cates tits.

You remember the drug dream Stu Nahan Scene.

Telling.

OK.

So, not being familiar with such sitcoms as Everybody Loves Raymond and Golden Girls means someone totally got ran, and Bushice got over big time, because he DID know the life and times of Bea Arthur.

But not being familiar with an iconic movie means that Bushice toooootally got over, big time.

Ya'know what... have fun, Bushice... my new Foe.

Good lordy, now you're spinning past history. Here, I'll help you out.

You failed to recognize that Peter Boyle was a featured player on a highly rated TV Show for 10 YEARS, so you got busted, but you really shit the bed after YOU pulled out the Bea Arthur and Golden Girl Reference as an excuse.

Yep, that's right. YOU called up that TV show ref as the reason why you didn't get the Frank Barone reference, not me or anyone else.

And why were you busted for that? Because you knew Bea Arthur was a Golden Girl, you stupid fuck!

However, you did get the part about me getting over big time, but I wasn't alone in that. Several others here piled on you quite successfully in that thread, right around the time you ran away from it.
But not being familiar with an iconic movie means that Bushice toooootally got over, big time.
hmmm Lets see.

The GREAT :meds: Stu Nahan was a sports broadcaster on a local TV Station a decade ago that I NEVER watched, nor lived close enough to even get. He had a bit part in a classic movie from 25 years ago, and I'm supposed to be FAMILIAR with THAT scene? What? Are you high?

Like I said, the image of Phoebe Cates tits will be in my memory forever, and the local radio sports station plays select clips from that movie now and then (Stu Nahans cameo not ever being one of them), but there is not a single movie I have EVER memorized lines from, nor will I ever do so. Recognize some? Sure. Recognize all? No fucking way.

So nice try there cliffy, but you cannot squirm out of your Bea Arthur suit quite yet.

Ya'know what... have fun, Bushice... my new Foe.
Oh Christ. That's like having the big fat girl chasing me around the school yard so she can sit on me for calling her fat. Three twinkies and a Ho-Ho later and she's gasping for air and I'm sitting on the monkey bars too high up for her stubby little arms to reach, laughing my ass off.

Good luck with that.

No links, but he was named "Shill" either by the hated Woody Paige, or possibly the hated Jay Mariotti for his ass-kissing performance as host of the Chuck Fairbanks TV Show whilst Chuckles was rolling up an impressive 7-26 record coaching the Colorado Buffalos.

Paige & Mariotti are both dickheads who are prolly just bitter that they didn't get to share a scene w/ Sean Penn & two hotties in bikinis.

Enough people loved him that they paid him several mil a year to do that TV show, and it ran for 10 years. He's got some :bode: right there.

But talk about a very below average stand up comic hitting the lottery. I remember when they used to feature him on the comedy channel way back when comedy was big, and he was never very funny. He must have a great agent, though.

Sometimes I like to apply a voice to a post. This one was Stewie from Family Guy.

Read it again and think of that voice in your head. Now picture him going off on one of his sarcastic rants ... you should be laughing now.

Rack TWIS.

I'm not familiar with the dearly departed, the movie reference I barely remember and regarding some of the shows and personalities mentioned I'm at a loss.

So I guess for once Dinsdale and Mr. Bushice can join forces and smack me for that.

Ah, the visual works too.
cuda wrote:Not knowing Golden Girls resets puts you in league with Dinsdale
Except of course it was Cliffy himself who used the Golden Girl / Bea Arthur reset in a lame attempt to defend himself. It went something like this:
Bushice: You stupid fuck spinsdale, you don't know who Peter Boyle is? They advertise the freaking show he's on daily, and it's been on for over 10 years.

Dinsdale:I don't know any of that 80's and 90's sitcom network crap, I was out scoring drugs and banging skanks during that time. It figures you're a fan of shows like that, though. I'll bet you tuned in to watch Bea Arthur on the Golden Girls nightly....

So one wonders, Cuda. How does a crap spewer like Dinsdale, who claims he doesn't watch those network shows and was out drugging and whoring when they were on the air know not only that Bea Arthur was on one of them, but also the name of the show she was on?

Sorry I hurt your brain with that abstract thought process, Cuda. Just go lay down and forget I even brought it up.

I don't know how thingies work in your area, Babshice, but in almost everywhere else in the country the TV has these things called "comercials" which is short for commercial advertisement, imo. Anyhow, I've seen commercials for these Bea Arthur shows & whatforth and they did not make me the least bit familiar with the actual episodes. I would guess Dinsdale has seen similar commercials, btw

The one problem with that Scenario you stupid fuck is that E.L.R. ran commercials non stop as well and did so much more recently, yet cliffy claimed ignorance of the show, didn't know Boyle was on it, but he nailed the Bea Arthur G.G. reset all by himself.

Getting it yet? Jesus, Cooter, do you jump out of bed head first every day?
