Woah. A Little Deja Vu for me here.
I just had a hardwood floor installed in our dining room (who the fuck puts carpet in a formal dining room? Idiots)
They sent out THREE vanilla ices, and one Jaz Hoyt supervisor. They were given specific instructions to:
1. Tarp off the room doors to minimize dust from spreading to the rest of the house. Vanilla #1 Fucker took a 24" by 48 inch piece of plastic and duct taped it HORIZONTALLY across the center of the doorway, leaving a space 2' x 3' below and 2' x 3' above the plastic with NOTHING COVERING IT. However, a 24" high strip of the walls on either side of the doorway were dust free for 12' either way.
2. Minimize dust by using a shop vac instead of brooms to clean up. Apparently new conversion stables have been developed, because two LARGE industrial brooms are now the equivalent of ONE shop vac.
I must have slept through shop class that day, or else I guess they revised the vacuum descriptions since then, but since when does a fucking shop vac have bristles that move the dust AWAY from it, billowing out into the room and onto everything in it?
3. Take the carpet in the room out in one piece, as it was going to be installed in our rec room. Vanilla #2 proceeded to cut it exactly in half, thereby rendering it useless in the rec room unless we paid to have a shop seam installed, or had a gap to trip over everytime we crossed the room.
4. Install the trim pieces using GLUE, not plastic anchors, as the floor will expand, crack the plastic, and lift up the trim. Jaz and Vanillas #1 and #3 proceed to install plastic anchors. I was watching by then, and stopped that shit cold. Reading installation instructions clearly printed on the work order is also no longer a minimum requirement.
ME: AH - why are you installing anchors?
JAZ: Because that's how we do it
ME: I specifically requested they be glued down
JAZ, VANILLA #1 in unison: NOBODY TOLD US THAT
ME: It's on the work order
JAZ & VN1, after looking at each other, harmonized again " It Is?"
ME: Check it
JAZ: (squinting, ciphering out each word phonetically) Use GA-LOO, Not ENK-ORS"
VN1:I"ll be Damned. We fucked up.
JAZ: Dumbass that's your job to read that.
VN1: Your the supervisor, Holmes. It ain't up in mine.
JAZ:( to VN #2 & 3) YO T-dog, Nick! Pull those anchors out now if you wanna work tomorrow!
JAZ:
Sorry Sir, we'll take care of it (rolls eyes at me like "Can you believe these dumbasses I have to work with"?)
However, apparently nothing is worse than being bitched at by a woman ignored, as it was my wife who submitted to the shop IN WRITING the above requirements. The shop made good on the carpet and gave us a full replacement piece, and offered to clean up any dust left behind.
Oh, and One of the Vanillas did the same shit to us - set up a boom box playing the most godawful monkey jibberish rap bullshit I've ever had my ears raped by. It is no fucking wonder they shoot at each other - They're trying to drown out the fucking radio.
If it didn't fucking waste my knees and back, I'd do all that shit myself.
Peace. out.

88, maybe your Vanilla Ice was the son of the interior decorator (or owner).
After all, those interior design unions wield tremendous political power and are the downfall of America.
Sin,
Dio.
Or, he might have been an illegal alien. You never know. Did you have the state check his papers? He sounds foreign to me.
Sin,
Oklahoma.
Rack the story, Btw.

88 we went through the same crap about a year ago. the wife decided that she was redecorating the living room (I cant afford a fag to decorate my house and so i depend on her :D ) any ways, we order the carpet and have every thing planned out so we tear out the old carped throw away the old couch and paint. couple days later the new carpet shows up and the next day the new furniture shows up. the carpet people show up and the seams don't match up. it looked like shit. i wouldnt let them leave and made them stop in the middle of the installation. Called the supervisor and started bitching. Of course the new carped would take another week to install and so now i have furniture coming in pieces of carpet not attached to anything on the floor. I told the supervisor he better bring a couple more guys as they are moving the couches and tables, because we couldn't change the delivery date with out occurring storage fees. fucking redecorating was a pain in the ass. but all I had to do was remove the old carpet and pad. Since I DON'T paint, I didn't do a whole lot, other than pay. now the living room looks great and now that we have a new puppy, (who is pissing all over the new carpet  ) so a new carpet is gonna need to be laid. wonder if Vanilla Ice can come by.
Rack your story BTW.

Wow...I think you guys just disrespected Rollins, Stevo, and pretty much ALL of Douschebag's Crew in this thread. Expect to face their wrath sometime soon.

Hey - I guess I should count myself lucky. We can't even get a contractor to answer our calls...which I presume is the more evolved version of the story above, where they have given in to their failure to offer a service and make good on it.

I am lucky. We have enough illegals down here who don't talk and just do the job. My brother-in-law sells carpet and hardwood commercially and he just gets one of the illegals to come over after hours and install any kind of carpet or wood flooring that is left over from a commercial project. It usually is about half the price as compared to going through a phone book.

So you and your family profit from illegal immigrants? Niiice.

B, I am going to tear out the part of my yard that lines with the driveway and put in some flatstone as a walkway along the driveway. The part I don't want to do is the uprooting of the grass. I will simply go down to the 2nd ward and go to "contractors paradise" and pick up one messican to uproot the yard for me and also do a few other things like pull weeds and trim some hedges and stuff. I'll pay him $75 for the day and feed him breakfast and lunch. If I call a landscaping company to do that job, they would charge me $200. Economics my friend. Economics.

Do you have them fill out tax forms? Do you have liability insurance that covers them if they get hurt on your property? What if they hurt someone else on your property? Does it even concern you in the slightest that you are committing a crime?

There's a sucker born every minute, my friend.
when i was 19, i worked as a carpet installer helper for a few months.
About that same age, I did that shit for like 2.5 years. But I woprked for a high-end contractor, and I don't recall ever hearing a complaint about a seam.
And if people actually used high-end contractors with experience, and checked the references of said contractor, or went to an established shop with someone coordinating the crews, I doubt they'd ever have a problem with such things, either. But gee, if you contract out through an "interior designer"...
Hold that thought -- let's explore the whole "interior designer" angle, shall we?
Let's see... some chick who couldn't figure out or wasn't intelligent enough to come up with a
real job, decides she wants to be a contractor, but wants to upgrade the name of the profession and doesn't actually want to get dirty.
Uhm, hello? You just hired a "contractor" that's never swung a hammer in her entire life, and is completely unfamiliar with the technical procedures of
anything she's contracting, and you're now suprised that the quality of workmanship is subpar?
Uhm... hello?
This suprises you...
why, exactly?
Stupid is as stupid does.

Not at all. Contract labor like this has been going on for years. Okay, what if I paid a high school kid to do the job? Should I 1099 him after the year is up?

Why not? I had to fill out a 1099 when I won tickets to a freakin soccer game from one of the local radio stations. If there is a chance you might pay one of these illegals over 600 in a given year, then you have that obligation. Never mind that by knowingly contracting work through non documented illegal workers, you are still committing a crime.

What's with all the WtoW carpeted living rooms? Did I go through some fukking time warp to 1984? Geezus H christ.
Hardwood, fukkers. Ever hear of it?
Real hardwood will last longer than you will and it laughs at dog piss.
Maybe out west and in the south where you fukks are to cheap to dig a basement, carpet is still the way to go. Up here in the U&R where we don't build houses directly on top of slabs, wood is the way to go.

Is this real reason why you didn't pay Wolfman? Because of the paperwork involved?

WTF are you talking about?
Sounds like you fucks are just too cheap to bucky up for good U&L lumber and build more stories.
Basement?
Yeah, we have a few of those -- which is dumb. Basements are in the ground. The water is in the ground. So, putting a room there is a good idea... remind me again why that is?
You live where it's cold. You think W-t-W carpet is a bad idea. You're a fucking idiot who should shut up. TIA.
