Alter Bridge

Post by RadioFan »

Sorry if this is glass dick, but I heard one of their songs tonight on the radio and dug the ever-loving fuck out of it.

The band is comprised of the former members of Creed (without Creed's singer ... they've got a new dude, who belts it out). I've always thought Mark Tremonti was a pretty decent hard-rock guitar player (when Scott Stapp would shut his whiney crooning and just let dude play).

(m) http://www.alterbridge.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (m)

When the page loads, click on the blackbird logo and you'll be on the home page. Click on the video for "Rise Today" -- that's the song. It starts relatively mellow, but quickly breaks out.

Call me a cheesebag or a dork, but this song has a sort of rock "anthem" quality to it. There's lots of slick production in this song, but there's something about it all coming together that I really dig. Hell, maybe I just haven't heard anything like this in a while. Either way, it's good shit if you just want to crank up a hard-rock song, loud, imo.

Anybody heard anything else from this band? I'm thinking of using a gift card I received over the holidays to pick up their CD.

Thoughts?

Lyrics:

The wind is blowing cold
Have we lost our way tonight?
Have we lost our hope to sorrow?

Feels like we're all alone
Running further from what's right
And there are no more heroes to follow

So what are we becoming?
Where did we go wrong?

Yeah, oh yeah
I want to rise today
And change this world

Yeah, oh yeah
Oh, won't you rise today
And change this world?

The sun is beating down
Are we ever gonna change
Can we stop the blood from running?

Our time is running out
Hope we find a better way
Before we find we're left with nothing

For every life that's taken
So much love is wasted

Only love can set it right
This world
If only peace would never die

Seems to me that we've got each other wrong
Was the enemy just your brother all along?

Yeah, oh yeah
I want to rise today
And change this world

Yeah, oh yeah
Oh won't you rise today
And change this world?

Btw, RACK independent radio.

In Tulsa, this should have been played on KMOD -- what used to be the best rock station in Oklahoma, (and way beyond) BEFORE it was bought out by Clear Channel, about 10 years ago. Now, of course, that "station" is nothing more than a modified "hip" soccer mom's CD changer, with about 100 songs by 80 bands.

Absolutely beyond horribly fucking predictably pathetic.

I'm pretty sure the powers-that-be at Clear Channel are watching a 48-hour marathon of "Friends," and sucking off the RIAA, every weekend. Seriously.

But, I digress. I heard this song on "The Edge".

When this song came on, I thought for a moment, I was back in 1979, listening to an actual rock station, but then I realized it wasn't Clear Channel ('sup BtH?), but independent radio, which was on the dial.

Independent Radio. You know, BtH, the ones that DIDN'T fuck up FREE Internet Web steaming of NON-MUSIC content, because they were greedy asshat fucktards and/or scared of the RIAA? THAT independent radio.

I've got both their albums...they're a much better band without Stapp. That new frontman has a great voice. I haven't listened to the second album much yet but I liked the first one a lot. Solid straight-ahead rock with well-written songs...nothing fancy but a good listen.

Cool observation. I didn't think of David Coverdale until you mentioned it.

Somebody, who will remain anymous, told me in PM, basically, this was overdue -- by about 10 years.

AGREE. But better late than never.

There is no "timeline" when it comes to R&R. Never has, never will be. RACK it.

Dudes, I've now had three days to listen to this album several times. Fucking Awesome.

BS,

If you've got limewire or another site, download "Brand New Start." You will dig the fuck out of it. Actually, the entire album kicks ass. Buy it.

Edited for No. 10, "When I'm Gone," -- the "ballad" -- on this album. Normally, I despise hard-rockers trying to do these kind of bullshit ballads, and 99 times out of 100 they suck, big-time. But this dude's voice is so fucking awesome, I actually dig the hell out of it.

Btw, Dins, my bro told me they've been playing that song on "Octane," in the U&L lately. Don't be fooled. It's, by far, the most mellow song on "Blackbird."

In the sense that I never get sick of "She Sells Sactuary," "Nirvana" or "Fire Woman" by The Cult, or "Della Brown" by Queensryche, among many others -- I never get sick of this hard-rock song. Ever.

All that being said, as I once described this song to someone who said they like hard rock, recently:

"The start of this song is like getting into a horse-drawn carriage ... and by the end of it, it's like you're in an F-15 fighter."

Brand New Start (link is live for 7 days. I renewed this one, and will continue to do so.)

Brand New Start

Against the sky
Streams of light
Call out to me and you
We leave as one
We’ve just begun
To find the solace we’re due
This is a life we must choose

WE WILL MAKE A BRAND NEW START
FROM THE PIECES TORN APART
THE BREAK OF DAY IS BEFORE US
CAST YOUR SORROWS TO THE WIND
LET THE HIGHWAY TAKE US IN
AS WE ESCAPE THE DISORDER

This desert road
That we call home
This is our destiny
We’ll chase the setting sun
As we outrun
A life of agony
God how we ache to be free

WE WILL MAKE A BRAND NEW START
FROM THE PIECES TORN APART
THE BREAK OF DAY IS BEFORE US
CAST YOUR SORROWS TO THE WIND
LET THE HIGHWAY TAKE US IN
AS WE ESCAPE THE DISORDER

{solo}

WE'LL MAKE OUR WAY
WE'LL MAKE OUR WAY
WE'LL MAKE OUR WAY
WE'LL MAKE OUR WAY

Sounds like someone took some Rush lyrics and sung them to a Nickelback song.

In other words, it's the same old boring disposable "radio friendly" crap that is killing rock radio.

You need to listen to it again.

And as I pointed out earlier in this thread, the Clear Channel station in Tulsa won't play this album, as I'm sure is the case for the rest of the country, given how open CC is to their local playlists.

Btw, if the singer from Nickelback was a fag, he still couldn't suck Myles Kennedy's dick and then try to attempt to sing this song. Are you kidding me?

B, this singer is fucking amazing. Granted, I've heard the entire album ... but dude, have a smoke, and then a listen, for christ's sake.

B,

here ya go:

Blackbird

The willow it weeps today
A breeze from a distance
Is calling your name
Unfurl your black wings and wait
Across the horizons coming to sweep you away
Its coming to sweep you away

Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again

The fragile can not endure
The wrecked and the and jaded a place so impure
The static of this cruel world
Cause some birds to fly long before they've seen their day
long before they've seen their day

Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you’ve known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again

Ascend may you find no resistance
Know that you've made such a difference
All you leave behind will live to the end
The cycle of suffering goes on
But the memories of you stay strong
Someday I too will fly and find you again

Let the wind carry you home
Blackbird fly away
May you never be broken again
Beyond the suffering you’ve known
I hope you find your way
May you never be broken again

Break me down

It's too late the time has come
I've kept this inside me for way too long
Silence will leave me cold
Lost on a highway that never takes me home

I want to step aside
I want to give it up
Before I lose it all
It's tearing me inside
The way you break me down

Oh there will come a time
When I will come undone
And you will let me fall
I'll leave it all behind
Before you break me down

The weight of a thousand lies
Promises broken haunt me all the time
You say that you're sure to change
But that black heart reveals that
You'll always stay the same

I realize
Forgiveness
Is calling
And it's calling

I've denied
The reason
I'm falling
And I'm falling

So let go

"Blackbird" and Saliva's "Blood-Stained Love Story" are currently in the rotation in my truck's CD player. Clearly AlterBridge went yard with this newest effort. Not a bad song on the whole CD IMO.
