The Mars Volta

Just bought a couple of their CDs, Frances The Mute and De-loused In The Comatorium. I've only listened to each one once all the way through, but it sounds like some pretty good shit. Definitely got a prog-rock vibe. Almost sounds like a cross between Fate's Warning and Dillinger Escape Plan.
So anyway, it's got me curious about At The Drive In and Sparta. I usually shy away from any band that has the "emo-" prefix attached to it in articles, but I'm definitely digging on this TMV stuff. Any ATDI fans on here? Is their sound anything like TMV? And how's that Sparta CD? Help me out before I waste my money...

ATDI was ok but Sparta sucks much fucking ass. Can't stand their sound at all.
<--- Huge Mars Volta fan. I downloaded Frances a few months back and still can't get enough of this fantastic CD, although I wouldn't rank it up there with De-loused In The Comatorium. That CD will NEVER get old. If you dig a band with talent actually digging into 10-15 minute riffs check out this band in concert.
BTW- Ain't nothing wrong with "Emo" tunage. I
it.

Like I said, I've only listened to both once, but I'm leaning toward agreeing with you that De-loused is the better of the two. Have you heard that EP? Can't remember the name off the top of my head.
Also, can you be more specific about what ATDI and Sparta sound like? Is it similar to TMV? BMG has that Sparta CD and they're having the buy 1 get 3 free sale, so I was tempted.
As far as "emo" goes, I gues when I hear the term "emo" I think of Jimmy Eats World & Dashboard Confessional. You know, the crap you have to put up with when your on a road trip and it's your GF's turn to pick a CD. Is Modest Mouse considered emo? They're pretty decent.

just saw a mars volta video on m2. Good thing nancy wilson slimmed down and has resurrected her career. is the entire album a 70's tribute. the video looks like the sabbath and heart got together and john page was free to let his occult side reign.

Excellent tunage to catch a buzz to. For some reason, TMV gains quality exponentially as the volume goes up.
I need to burn/score Frances, so I can give it a road-trip-review.
In honor of this thread, I just fired up The Widow on MP3.
Nice to hear a band that sounds like they want to sound, rather than how the man with the checkbook wants them to sound.
TMV is better than ATDI-btw.
