What I am hearing is that Shaw, a RB that was a PSU recruit changed his mind at the last minute and decided to come to Michigan. This kind of freaked Sam out. McGuiffie had a visit to California that went well. Insiders think he'll still come to Michigan but probably wants assurance that he is the guy.

I'd feel worse about this if he didn't suck balls in his two national appearances.


Michigan ended up with a top 10 class with a new coach. I am pretty happy with the day.

That's awesome news about McGuffie not backing out on Michigan. I knew RichRod hung onto to Fred Jackson for a reason and he was supposedly a big player in helping bringing in the YouTube legend. You can never have too much talent at running back in the Big Ten so getting him and Shaw are huge after losing Hart. Brown and Minor will bring experience and can allow McGuffie and Shaw to be brought along slowly unless they hit the ground running in the spring time.

Local Michigan-Insider radio was ragging on MSU pretty hard the day Nick Perry tossed MSU to the curb. Then he went and pimpslapped Michigan by signing with USC. I got a chuckle out of that.

On the surface, it doesn't look like MSU had a great recruiting year but Dantonio was able to get back into the Detroit scene and nab some solid kids. This is territory that John L refused to venture into for whatever reason. Just conceding it to Michigan, I guess. It's important for Dantonio to try and stake his claim in the Detroit area, and he's well on the path.

I don't think its fair to judge McGuffie on his two national appearances. A high ankle sprain happening in the first half of the first game pretty much killed his season last year. I was at the Cy Falls game and it was apparent he didn't have that second shift to get away from defenders. He will be fine next year. I'm happy he stuck with Michigan.

Seriously though.....this kid has taken exactly zero collegiate snaps. My goodness, what is up with about 6 fan bases jerking off to the guy? I got news for you guys......the majority of the top recruits every year don't amount to much in college. Take a look at all the 4 and 5 star busts. There's a big chunk of them every year. Yes, I know there's less of a percentage of 1,2, and 3 star recruits that make it in college than 4 and 5 stars but it's insane to act like a 13 year old girl that just saw Joey Lawrence's 6-pack on TV every time a big shot recruit is interested in their team.

College football fans have become 13 year old girls. You guys should all just change your moniker's to "ILuvJT69" or "Hott4LanceBass".

I don't get too excited about any recruit. I wait until they see the field before doing that because you just never know how a recruit will turn out. Stars are overrated.

Heck, Northern Iowa has had a couple of 5-star recruits playing for them recently, and that includes Whitney Lewis a former USC WR who couldn't hack it in the Pac-10. You'd be amazed to see how many 4 and 5-stars either spend their entire career sitting the bench or transfer to a lesser school/division because they can't hack it. I just think it's insane to get so giddy over some 18 year old kid before you've really seen what he can do.

In 2002 there were 38 5-star recruits according to Rivals.com. Looking through the list I see maybe a handful of players that were ever All-Americans and Devin Hester is the only 1 on that list that is even worth a shit in the NFL right now. And going be on that, the rest of the Top 100 ended up pretty mediocre.

Since we're talking about a QB here (Pryor), wanna know who the #1 QB in 2003 was? Kyle Wright, who was the 5th ranked prospect overall. Whitney Lewis was 3rd. Overall the 2003 class of 5-stars was better than 2002. There were 25 and only about half of them were busts. The list includes Reggie Bush, Greg Olsen, Robert Meacham, and Jarvis Moss. So not too shabby. But still, only about 50% really amounted to much in college.

Going on to 2004. There were 5 QB's that were 5 star recruits and 4 of them were busts. The 4? Rhett Bomar, Xavier Lee, Matt Tuiasasopo, and Anthony Morelli. The other was Chad Henne. Of the 3 years I have mentioned so far, this was the best in terms of 5-star recruits. Still quite a few busts but the list includes Adrian Peterson, Ted Ginn Jr, Keith Rivers, Early Doucet, Chad Henne, and Derrick Harvey.

Texas is a school that gets a lot of 5-star recruits, so here's another example....

2002- 5 5-star recruits. How many All-Americans of those 5? 2. How many busts? 3.
2003- 1 5-star recruit. Tony Hills Jr. Never heard of the guy. Must have been a bust or I would know of him.
2004- 1 5-star recruit. Frank Okam. Very good....not great, player.
3 years, 7 5-stars, 4 busts. 3/7 were impact players

Florida another good example.

2002- 1 5-star. Ciatrick Fason. Average player at best is now a crappy backup in the NFL
2003- 5 5-stars. 4 were very good-great players. The other a bust.
2004- 1 5-star. Derrick Harvey. Pretty solid player.
3 years, 7 5-stars. 1 bust, and 5-7 were impact players, 1 average player

Next is Florida State.....

2002- 6 5-stars. Only Lorenzo Booker and Leon Washington amounted to much of those 6 players and neither of them were all that good.
2003- 1 5-star. Ernie Sims. All-American.
2004- 1 5-star. Xavier Lee. Complete bust. Still can't beat out another bust- Drew Weatherford.
3 years, 8 5-stars, 5 busts, 1/7 impact players, and 2 average players

Last one I'll do is USC....

2002- 0 5-stars.

Recruiting is a joke. People that get caught up in it are insane. Most of these tards on message boards haven't even seen any of these kids play, they've just seen a few highlights or read about them on the web. And if they have seen them play, they've seen them play against inferior competition. Take a look at the Top 100 recruits over the last 5-6 years and you'll see that most of the players on that list don't amount to much in college for one reason or another. I never get too excited about anyone, which is why I wasn't on here jerking off to Iowa's 2005 class that included a couple of 5-stars, one of the top QB's, and a bunch of other 4-star recruits. I wait until they actually play in college before getting excited because you don't know who will and who won't make it. Of course the best schools are the ones that get the 4 and 5-star recruits consistently, but there's no reason to get all giddy over individual players. You should get excited about overall classes because if you have a big class, chances are you'll be in good shape, but you have to realize a decent percentage of those big-shot recruits will end up being complete busts.

It's a numbers game folks! Stop going so insane over individual recruits it just makes you sound dumb in a couple of years when you're ripping the kid a new asshole on the message boards because he can't even see the field in his 3rd year on campus. I saw it when Iowa landed Blake Larsen, the top OT in the nation and one of the Top 10 overall recruits, in 2001 and the kid never saw more than a few minutes of action his entire career. It was daily posts ripping on him and people wondering why he couldn't play when we had a bunch of 2-star recruits starting. The reason is quite simple......they were better.

3 of the 8 5 star players from the 04 class (though the list I saw only had 7 five star players in that class) were JC players, and none were "busts", Byers as a true freshman joined 1 of those JC players on a solid O line that went undefeated the next year and was wire to wire #1. He still has a couple years to prove he is more than an average player. Ware was a solid safety and a big hitter, Powdrell was moved to FB where a horrible ankle injury vs Nebraska cut his career short.
Jeff Schweiger was huge as a freshman that year too, even sacked White in the Orange Bowl but family issues made him want to go be closer to home in San Jose.
Lewis is the only out right bust, Schweiger is a disappointment but with family issues you cant blame the kid
I think Bush, Davis, Rivers and Lutui have or all will go on to be day 1 draft picks in the NFL 4 years after signing with the school, seems like an impact to me. If Jarrett was the 8th 5 star on your list from 04, add him too. Byers and Schweiger may yet still be, Schweiger just elsewhere.

some people treat college like the academy and take their fair share of classical literature courses. most treat it as an opportunity to network their way into a job afterward. consider how many people's first job happens to be where they interned. i wouldn't mind a general studies degree that comes with the opportunity to network with the insanely rich alumni who hang around the football program.
