Any WEC Fans Around Here?

They put on a pretty damn good show last night (for free) on Vs. Don't worry if you missed the broadcast as they'll rerun it about 26,000 times.
Great fight between Manny Tapia and Antonio Banuelos.
The Varner/McCullough fight was also good, even though the tards in the crowd booed whenever the fighters stopped flailing for more than a microsecond.
And anyone who likes jiu-jitsu has got to check out Miguel Torres. Holy shite, this guy is talented.
[Spoiler]
Dins, Carlos Condit beat Carlo Prater, a guy with a 21-6 record, with a smooth, almost effortless GUILLOTINE CHOKE.

I casually follow the WEC.
Frankly, while there's always plenty of entertaining fights, the only one in there worth a fuck is Uriah Faber, who is amazing (and one of the more obvious steroid freaks, but every MMA fighter in the country is on the sauce).
And refer to my comments in the other thread about rear chokes. A guillotine is possibly even more of a fuckup. They should pass a rule in MMA -- if a fighter loses to a guillotine, his trainer is brought to the middle of the cage and publicly flogged, since he obviously did something wrong.
I don't recall EVER losing to a guillotine. Must have been because I paid at least a little attention in those first couplefew weeks of juijitsu class where they teach you pretty extensively how to not lose to a guillotine -- which is pretty simple, barring some major strength discrepency.
And I laugh like a hyena every time someone gets guillotined while in someone's gaurd... "Damn, dude -- I'd have no business getting in that cage on my best day... but I could obviously teach you some basics."
Inexcusable.

The first fight will make you groan with the guillotine, but the second fight with Torres is really impressive. Beebe is an excellent fighter with a win over Rani Yahya, but he was totally outclassed.

I didn't click your links, since as you mentioned, they'll rerun that sucker 48,000 times on Versus.
Have you seen Faber on there yet? He's definitely the shining star of the WEC (which if you didn't know, is simply the minor leagues of the UFC... same outfit, more or less).
Faber is so good, I'll even turn a blind eye to the flagrant roid use (since I really couldn't care less, and recently some retired fighters have come out anonymously and placed roid use right around 100% in MMA). There's some badass rasslers that come out of UCDavis.

Faber is great. He could outscramble a lowland gorilla.
I used to think the "minor league" tag fit the WEC, but not so much anymore. That last show featured some impressive fights. A lot of people are picking Carlos Condit to be brought to the UFC and I think he'd hold his own. If the UFC ever creates a bantamweight class then both Faber and this new guy Torres could dominate.
As for the 'roids charge, the fighters are tested by various state sanctioning bodies, and some have been suspended (Sean Sherk, most notably). I don't know anything about steroids or testing so I can't confirm or refute your claim. Steroids suck, however. I'm also not a fan of guys who cut tons of weight.

And Tim Sylvia. And Hermes Franca. And Nate Marquardt. And Stephan Bonnar. And Royce Gracie.
And a whole buncha others.
Steroids are done in cycles. Allegedly, guys do drug tests on themselves, to figure out the exact window they need to stop during to make sure they come up clean.
I tend to believe the "approaching 100%" claim.
And I wouldn't be suprised if Faber could tear up some of the lightweight guys in the UFC. He's the only WEC guy I think currently has a good shot at stardom on the next level. But that might require even more juice to bulk up to lightweight.

I met Brian Stann last month. He's a real nice guy. Didnt know he was a USNA grad. Class act all the way.

I'd add Paulo Filho to that short list.
A guy that I rolled with here in Houston has signed a contract with WEC. His name is Todd Moore. He had one fight in the WEC already. It was a decision loss to John Allesio from Xtreme Couture, who has over 30 pro fights (to include fights against Pat Miletich, Diego Sanchez, Joe Doerksen and Thiago Alves). Todd trained BJJ at the gym I went to and trained kickboxing with Yves Edwards. He has dropped down a weight class (to lightweight) going forward. I thought he was super strong at 170, he's going to be a huge 155.

Were you around longer than him? So that if and when he becomes a MMA star, you can tell everybody "I tapped that guy out," and no one will believe you?

Let's just say that he's more advanced and skilled than me. We'll leave it at that.
