Nothing new about isolating people and mugging them.
I was in Hollywood quite a few years back with a girlfriend, and we were coming out of one of the comedy clubs when this guy walks up and asks me if I could help him push his car off the street. He points down this side street where a car is in the street but pretty much in the dark, in between the street lights. I could see a couple of people next to the fence on the sidewalk in the shadows a few cars farther down. Maybe he thought I couldn't see that far, but that was the lamest attempt I've ever seen at a mugging.
I told him to call a tow truck or the cops and walked.
