"southern" often refers to a genre...but with the way they worded it there, it doesn't seem that was the intention.

Not to mention, "Southern" should be capitalized, regardless of whether they were trying to say that the Black Keys are from the South or just play Southern (rock?) music.

I'm surrounded by it. I'm always reading about te hot new "Portland Indie Band" that barely found their way from the bus station to the hotel. I guess that's some cool label for indie bands to be these days.
"Hey, this indie band is fresh!"
"Yeah, but are they from Portland?"
Because I'm sure locale has a huge æffect on the final sound... or not.
I think I know how San Franciscans felt 40 years ago.
