Samuel Adams beer may contain glass shards

The brewer of Samuel Adams beer is recalling selected bottles of beer that may contain tiny bits of glass.
Boston Beer Co. said today that the recall comes after routine inspections at a company brewery in Cincinnati found defects in 12-ounce beer bottles made by a third-party supplier. Inspectors discovered that bits of glass could break off and possibly fall into the bottle.
Fewer than one in 100 of the bottles from the Cincinnati plant are believed to be defective.
The Sam Adams beers affected by the recall have a special marking on the base of the bottle. The marking has the letter "N" followed by the number 35, followed by the letters "OI."

You can damn well bet that if dins has had SA, it was bottled in the U&L and he can prove it.

That's hilarious coming from someone who drinks the sewage you call beer. I'll take a Sam Adams with glass chunks over Buttwiper (or Butt Light) any day.War Wagon wrote:Sam Adams is horribly rank. I have no idea how anybody could drink that utter horsepiss.

Typical beer snob reply, and quite expected. Yeah, you'll take A (as in ONE, as that's all you can stomach) Sam Adams, because you're not a real beer drinker. Drink six of 'em, and you'll be hugging the porcelain God and calling in sick to work the next day.Smackie Chan wrote: That's hilarious coming from someone who drinks the sewage you call beer. Bud Lite is a servicable beer for beer drinkers, but if you insist on paying for a premium label, go with something like St. Pauli Girl or Dos Equis.
Sam Adams should be reserved for removing bug and road tar from Rack Fu's $50k SUV.

Not far from the truth, actually. I seldom drink at all, and don't drink beer that often. So on the infrequent occasions when I do throw back, I sure as hell ain't gonna drink BL. I'd rather have something with some taste.War Wagon wrote:you're not a real beer drinker.
Prolly not, but just the smell of cheap beer ('sup, Bourbon Street?) reminds me of the days when hangovers were a good possibility.Drink six of 'em, and you'll be hugging the porcelain God and calling in sick to work the next day.
Translation: If you're gonna drink a case at a time, why bother with flavor?Bud Lite is a servicable beer for beer drinkers
Both are deece, as are any number of other brews, including Sam Adams. BL just isn't one of 'em. Then again, there's no accounting for taste. I've come to understand that a beer's quality is inversely proportional to the quality of its TV commercials. BL's ads are by far the best.if you insist on paying for a premium label, go with something like St. Pauli Girl or Dos Equis.
Maybe so, since BL probably isn't good for that, either.Sam Adams should be reserved for removing bug and road tar from Rack Fu's $50k SUV.

Anyway, I'm apparently not the only one who believes BL (along with most other lagers) is lacking in the flavor department:
http://www.phillyburbs.com/beer/types.shtmlPilsner: Budweiser. Miller. Pabst Blue Ribbon. They say it’s beer, and it seems to effect people (eventually) so there it is. It may be beer on training wheels, but it upholds a noble heritage. They are patterned after an original recipe brewed in 1842 in the town of Pilsen, Czech Republic. Great. Weak Russian beer. Still, it's 4-5 percent of alcohol by volume, so it does something.

Yep. Their marketing/advertising department does a hell of a job though. It's not bad beer per se, but if you're going to shell-out the kind of money SA wants for its beer, you're much better off throwing down for your favorite microbrew.Toddowen wrote:Sam Adams is too overpriced for its taste.
I've got no problems with the B-Minus quaffers. I just don't get those who argue that it's "quality." Yeah, I eat fast food on an occasion, but at least I'm not trying to justify it as 5-Star, Zagat rated cuisine. Sort of reminds me when DTC attempted to label Taco Bell as "authentic" mexican.

Don't be hating on Pilsner. It's ok - when you don't make it with fucking rice, or worse yet, genetically modified rice.
Why any red-blooded American would deign to drink rice soda is beyond me...if that makes me a snob, then so be it.

PSUFAN, interesting you should mention Pilsner. Next time you're in C-Bus check out Barley's on North High Street across from the convention center. They have a great Pilsner. Maybe you can use that to wash down another Penn State defeat.

That's nothing. A friend of mine says he once had a bottle of American beer and found things called 'taste' and 'alcohol' in it.

Re: Quick. Check your bottled beer...!!!!
Let's face it - once you have to store beer for distribution around the world, you have to sacrifice quality.
An Englishman is never going to know how good a U&L brew is if he's drinking it from a bottle, can, or keg that sat on a ship. Trust Dins, Nish - it's better than you think, WAY better.
Similarly, while we can enjoy a Sammy Smith Nut Brown Ale from a bottle in Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, and Portland, it's doomed to be lesser than in Tadcaster - that's just the way it is.
Also - if you're in Middle America, you're just FUCKED when it comes to beer, ASSES. Best dump some rubbing alcohol into some spoiled Sierra Mist and strain it through a mouthful of rice - you're getting a better beer than the pisswater you're swilling and using words like "gold" to describe, shitheads.

I've sampled just about every beer known to man, but I always end up with these in my top three (aside from Hamm's, of course):
Summit Extra Pale Ale (brewed in St. Paul)
Fuller's London Pride
Fuller's ESB
I've never been a fan of anything brewed by Sam Adams.

Doing yardwork, I always kick back 5-6 bottles of Miller Lite or MGD Lite, whatever is in the beer fridge outside.
Ordering at a bar, I like a good IPA. Sierra Nevada makes one I enjoy. Of course, I drink one, maybe two, of these and am done with beer for the night. Same with Bass Ale. I think one is ok, maybe 2 but give me Jack and Coke after that or Makers on the rocks.

Me neither, 'cept for their Cranberry Lambic, which they only make around Christmas time. That stuff is damn good. Most of the rest of their stuff has way too much malt for me and tastes like molasses.Uncle Fester wrote: I've never been a fan of anything brewed by Sam Adams.
I like stouts and Hefeweizen (Dins cringes). My favorite stouts are Guiness and Beamish and my favorite Hefeweizens are Pyramid, Taps (local OC (Brea) joint) and Sudwerk (NoCal brewpub).
Most of the beers at BJ's are halfway decent in a hand-crafted Budweiser sort of way, especially for a place that is basically a Chili's that happens to brew beer.

Bittburger, though better than 99% of the pilsners produced in the US, is considered the Budweiser of Germany. I loved that shite though.

Next time I'm in Germany, I'll check them out. For now in the states, I prefer to drink something that hasn't been in a warehouse for three months before finding its way to the supermarket cooler, thanks.mvscal wrote: You need help. If you are going to drink wheat beers, you need to drink German or Belgian wheats. It's not that American wheats are gay...they just suck.
Schneider Weisse, Erdinger, Tucher and Franziskaner from Germany and Hoegaarden from Belgium are good places to begin.
You might also want to try a real Belgian lambic sometime just for kicks.
Agreed that the vast majority of American wheats blow. My (least) favorite is when they cut out the middle man and put the lemon in the beer FOR YOU. Uh, thanks, but I'm more than capable. I went out to dinner with my Sister-in-law and her sperm donor a few months ago and he was raving about the Hef at a local pub. I read the description on the menu, which said that it included lemon and orange zest and promptly ordered an IPA. I'm not drinking a beer that requires a "pinky out".
I've had some other lambics, but didn't really care for them as much as I did the SA one, which isn't fan-freaking-tastic, it's just that it's readily available. I can't remember the brand (it was in my emu house days), but I did find a Belgian cranberry lambic that was better than SA's, but the place that I bought it from only carried it for one year. I guess not enough people dug it as much as I did.
Of course, I hardly ever drink anymore and when I do it's stout 90% of the time. My liver is pretty much retired.

The value of a well-stocked bottle store nearby, preferably in walking distance, can't be measured by conventional means.
And that's a rule that transcends any quibbles over individual taste, or lack thereof as the case may be.

Back in college, I used to go to the Essen Haus in Madison for pretzels, polka, and a great beer called Dortmunder Union. I think they had two kinds, Export and DAB. Anyone ever have it?
Re: Quick. Check your bottled beer...!!!!
Used to pound down Dortmunder in 2 liter clay steins at a German bar on the North Side of Syracuse. Good stuff !

Me and my friends once had the pleasure of the keys to the Fullers tasting room for an entire afternoon. There was one barrel that had no markings apart from a post-it note with '9%' written on it. So obviously, after tasting everything else, we took turns in lying under the barrel and having the tap poured into our mouths.
I can't remember anything else about that day, but the photos indicate it was a good 'un.
(oh, and I know about those microbreweries in America; good on 'em. And DAB is proper. Going through a Leffe phase at the moment - anyone tried that?)

Nish:
Didn't Fuller's have a fire at the brewery? In my head, I imagine Fuller's and Sammy Smith's to be of the old school -- beautiful, ornate breweries with outstanding tasting rooms staffed by buxom, beautiful women. Have you toured Smith's brewery as well? Their Nut Brown Ale was always a favorite of mine until I sampled the various Fuller's offerings at Brit's Pub in Minneapolis.
I know the serious beer drinkers like the stouts, but I've always prefered a Harp lager (etc.) mixed in with the heavy stuff.
I find Newcastle to be kind of flat and tasteless, nor do I care for Boddinton's.
I used to find something called "Double-Diamond" to be passable, and I've choked down a few pints of bleedin' Watney's Red Barrel, but can't say I miss either one.

Re: Quick. Check your bottled beer...!!!!
Has anyone ever had John Courage? I had it a few times on tap at a pub about 100 years ago and absolutely loved it. I then bought a six pack about 5 years ago and had to choke it down.
Is there a big difference between bottled and keg with this brand? Maybe they were two different types of john courage.
My current favorite among brit swill, well, I guess it's actual Irish, is smythwicks. Awesome stuff.
