Anyone else feel that? Only a 5.2, but it woke us up. We are about 45 miles from the epicenter so we sustained no damage. Just a 4:40 wake-up call that sucked. Curious if anyone closer may have had damage.

It was about 5:30 (I'm on EST) and I had woken up just a little before, contemplating whether to et up and go to the gym or wait till evening. Next thing I know, the whole house starts to shake and I'm thinking WTF?!?!?! I thought it was one of the big winds like we get around here occasionally that will make the house groan a little bit. But this was totally different. Lasted about 10 seconds and I thought if this gets any worse, the walls would come down. It ends and I get up to look outside. Trees are dead still. I'm thinking......"earthquake????.........maybe...." And go back to bed. Flip on the radio at 6:30 or so and they're talking about it. No damage but this was my first one and it was very weird.

My first too. It was wierd, but I wasn't freaking out like my wife was because it really wasn't that bad. Just a few pictures and things shifted around. Once the resident Calis get in here, expect plenty of "5.2? Puhhhhhlease." replies.

5.0 is about where you start noticing it.

5.5-6.0 or so is when things start rocking.

Beyond that... you'll have to ask the calis. Hasn't been one bigger than that around here in my lifetime (or the pioneers' lifetime, which they tell me means "we're due").

Did the paint on the door/window frames crack?

I've lived in Cali for a total of about 44 years, both the Bay Area and LoCal. I can remember actually feeling maybe a half dozen quakes and only two that really jolted me. I was taking a nap on the sofa when the Imperial Valley quake hit in 1979 (6.6). Basically it woke me up.

If felt the Northridge quake enough from San Diego that it woke me up at 4:30 in the morning and kept shaking for what seemed like half a minute. Turned the TV on to see LA sliding into a yawning crack in the ground.

My mom was within probably 20 miles of the epicenter of the Loma Prieta Quake (the one that interrupted the World Series). Didn't damage the house but all of the china was broken and the ancient grandfather clock basically walked away from the wall, turned around and fell over.

45 miles is plenty close enough, I'd say. Reports say it was felt as far away as Iowa. There have been warnings of the New Madrid fault going postal for years. This may have just been a precursor for when the Mississippi river changes course and flows North again.

I'd rather be in a quake than a hurricane or tornado or some of the other natural disasters. Basically they're over in a few seconds and you're not really in that much physical danger unless you're:

a) in an old building built to substandard codes
b) on any level of a multi-deck freeway
c) on the Bay Bridge
d) right on the fault

Most houses don't fall down in a quake.

A big fire is a helluva lot scarier than a quake.

Fires often follow big quakes.

For example, Pickle fires up a smoke after getting his ass shaken by a Street Nubian.

J_hawk's cheeks were aflame after lk_pk sat on them.

NoCal had to apply aloe on her booty after spending all day with her cheeks up in the air, welcoming all passers by.

The Vogel family has been run out of several homes by flames after a mvscal visit.

BCO squirms in his seat and cries "IT BURNS!!!" after visits from his preacher.

For the most part, only trailer park residents get hurt in a tornado. I call that God cleaning house. There's always some collateral damage that He is sorry for, but the trailer parks He is not.

Not sure what it is like in the rest of the country. I know in the trailer parks of Oklahoma they may not have the warning systems we do, but when a tornado is forming, we have sirens going off. We also subscribe to the local news tornado alert system. Anytime a siren is set off, our phone automatically rings. That way, if you are asleep and do not hear the sirens, you get the call and head to the basement.

Granted, if the tunnel forms over your house (not trailer), you may not have the chance to move. However, the meterologists, while having almost 0% chance of predicting the rain accurately for the most part, have a pretty good handle on tornado warning signs.

So, I will give this to tornados. I'll take my chances with a quake while I sleep. If it is daytime, I'd take an F3 going over my house vs. being in the epicenter of a 5.5+ quake. Hopefully, I am never in either of those situations. This morning was the closest I have been to either. I have seen 1 tornado, prolly an F1 when I lived in Dallas. It was small. It was about 1/2 mile from my house when I saw it. We had a 5.2 quake this morning 45 miles form my house and our house was rumbling for 20 seconds pretty good.
