Byrne also addressed the Aggies' move last year from Nike to adidas as the department's apparel provider.

He said he met with a Nike representative and requested the same deal as A&M's chief rival, Texas.

Byrne said he was offended when the rep told him, "You're not as good as they are and you're probably never going to be." That statement made Byrne's decision to switch to adidas even easier, he said, in addition to what was a more lucrative deal.

And if you're really interested, go check out what the Texas Legislature appropriates each year for each school; UT gets more $ from the state than A&M because it is the premier institution in the state (the same thing happens in Louisiana with LSU).
A lot of that has to do with the oil distrubution laws in the state. East and west of I-35 determines a lot of allocatioin in Texas.

having ATM as a client, regardless of UT, ain't nothing to sniff at for Nike.

maybe they see it as market saturation, but ATM is a big-time money school after joining the Big XII and losing the "regional" tag that the SWC had.

that said, outside of those horrible Tron things Adidas did to Nebraska in 02 (what happened Bugeaters?)....i think the Adidas stuff looks really good as a general rule. even though i think i was right all along that Callahan is a jerkoff and a bad fit for NU, the Adidas stuff looked great.

I've been happy with Neb's longtime affiliation with Adidas, Phil Knight is a POS anyway.

I'd say that is a stupid thing for the Nike-rep to say but I'd also say that they aren't in a position now to demand the same deal as the horns. I think the aggies can get there but they aren't there.
