if he hangs a couple 17 win seasons on the Farm, he's no heir apparent anymore.

I think this was a smart move on his part. Who knows what type of input K will have on who his replacement will be whenever he does hang em up, but the powers that be at Dook (and likely K and Dawkins as well) have to have the whole Smith/Guthridge debacle in the back of their minds. Not sure you want to hand the keys to the kingdom over to someone who's never run the show before. And at the current time the best option with HC experience from the K tree is Brey, so I'd say if them Dook boys want to remain at a lofty level when K is done they better get someone ramped up for the role.
In moderatley related news, former Stanford commit Miles Plumlee got released from his LOI and is now heading to Durham. He'll be joined the following year by his younger (and better) brother Mason. Baby bro Marshall is already 6'9 as a frosh this past season and is purported to be the best of the bunch.

"Our staff is going to ensure that anyone who attends this University and wears the Indiana uniform will make this privilege among their highest priorities and not treat the opportunity as an entitlement,'' Crean said in a statement. "We fully expect our student-athletes to accept the responsibilities academically, athletically and socially that come with representing one of the top programs in college basketball history."

Re: Johnny Dawkins takes the Stanford job
i don't agree. if Coach K says King Crimson is the next HC at Duke, I'm the next HC at Duke. they aren't thinking like the Guthridge situ up the road. no way Brey gets the job, unless he starts making Final Four runs on a regular basis. i actually kind of like Mike Brey, but if alums and K assistants not named Johnny Dawkins are the K tree list....Jeff Capel gets that job over Brey.Shine wrote:I think this was a smart move on his part. Re: Johnny Dawkins takes the Stanford job
This is a bad time to take the Stanford job. I would have passed.
Stanford is going to be way down next year, compared to where they have been for more than a decade, and with Mike Montgomery at their rival, things could get ugly in a hurry.
Trent Johnson got out at the right time. I wouldn't have stepped into that spot.
