Morel mushrooms
That time of the year when they're poppin' here in the midwest and Penn. Something I love doing- hiking through the woods and picking them. Regrettably, they're a pain in the ass to find. Anyways, anyone else hunt these damned things or am I the only one here who's willing to spend 2 hrs. in the woods, many times finding NOTHING.
So, I've got about 50 right now and am looking for a good recipe. Anyone got any suggestions?
I've already done the 'Tarragon cream sauce', frying in a bit of butter, and in omelettes.

They're here in Southern Indiana. Last year, I hunted for them with some buddies and we got about 150 of them. I took some and fried them in a tempura batter. Made a rich garlic alfredo sauce to dip them in. Good stuff.
Not sure if I will do it this year.

ANYWAY, the blasphemy of it all... I could've done anything w/the morels. I mean, shit- they're essentially top shelf mushroom material. I freaking saute`ed them in butter and put 'em on a burger. Still, some good shit though.

Fast food joint Burgerville features a burger with suate'ed chantrelles, or shiitakes, or some such shit every year.
Doesn't make you a bad person.

No, but morel season is such a short one. Couple that w/my extensive travel and I've little time to hike into the woods and hunt 'em. Up in Michigan, morel haven, right now. Peak of the season and no time to go hiking into the woods. Dead/declining Elms are everywhere up here, this being the most common location to find morels. Elms are a piece of pie to pick out of the landscape which doesn't make me any more happy knowing I can't search under 'em as I drive by literally hundreds of them.
Edit to add: I can at least take solace that chanterelle season is only a few months away- those being MUCH more easily found.
