I'll always remember him as the voice of ABC's Wide World of Sports...

"the thrill of victory, the agony of defeat."

RIP

Where else would we have been treated to such sports as barrel jumping by ice skaters at Grossinger's ?
Classic old school stuff on those Saturday afternoons !
RIP Jim

Ankle-biting? You're recognized as a babbling fucktard in every forum you choose to despoil with your "posts", bitch.

really? That's funny, i have yet to see anything you have brought to this board. I do see your best attribute is to follow fat paul around ankle biting and tarding up others threads. Pretty impressive jerkoff. Your a shit troll, nothing more, nothing less.

Zero interesting takes or comments. If ankle biting was an occupation, you would be a billionaire, but in the real world it isn't and your still a no-take cunt. ZERO.

Will always remember him for both the Wild World of Sports and for hosting the Olympics, especially 1972 in Munich. Dude could work for hours without a script.

Imagine that; understated, modest, humble, eloquent. Somebody send a memo to ESPN.

Usually when a public figuer passes I, like many in here, are quick to smell the blood in the water and come in and get off my poor taste posts for cheap amusment. Some individauls, however, are off limits from such treatment. Jim McKay was one of those. RIP.

I'll second that. McKay was a regular Saturday afternoon fixture in my house for years. I trace my current dislike to the Olympic Games to the moment McKay and ABC stopped doing the broadcasts. RIP

Very Nice, and a fitting tribute.

Yeah, the dude is/was off limits. Sometimes you just take your hat off and bow in utter respect.

Jim McKay overstated a bunch of blacks, who happened to be doing well. He was a so-so broadcaster.

Sin,

mvscal.

RACK poptart.

Btw, Pikkle, any and all responses, by you, to my take will be deleted, so don't even try.

TIA.

Not knocking the man, his life, or his work, but the hyperbole now being attached to his death is already starting to wear thin. Jim Lampley saying that the line, "They're all gone" was the greatest moment in sportscasting history is pure bullshit and an incredibly weak attempt to overglorify the moment. Not saying it wasn't memorable, but it really wasn't that great.

Evidence that looks can be deceiving. Lamps is more into crustaceans than meaty mammals.

Lampley is full of shit. It was hardly a "sportscasting event" but a sportscaster handling a major news event. McKay did an admirable job (he even received a nice letter from Walter Cronkite) but this was a regular guy (McKay) dealing with an extremely difficult situation. Folks at home could relate to that and that's what made it significant.

Regarding the "greatest moments in sportscasting history?" That's a thread I'd like to see.

I miss Gary Thorne doing playoff hockey.

I miss Bob Costas doing playoff baseball. Skully is still the greatest though.

I miss Al, Frank, and Dan.

Last but not least, college football just isn' t the same without Keith Jackson.

I've said it before, but Al Michaels is highly overrated. Sure, he has a decent set of pipes, and is usually well-informed. But he's not terribly insightful, and his biggest weakness is that he thinks he has a sense of humor that really isn't there. His listeners would be far better served were he to accept the role of straight man to whomever is in the booth with him. Instead, he tries to one-up Madden, and falls flat on his face. Not that Madden is Dane Cook, but Michaels should assume the role of Bud Abbott to Madden's Lou Costello.

I'm sure I'm not alone in my opinion that the glory years of MNF were when Frank, Don, and Howard manned the booth. You could love or hate Cosell (and most people prolly didn't love him), but they made for a most entertaining broadcast crew.
