Not like you worthless fuckstains even deserve to know, but I thought I'd let you rotting shitbags know I got fed up with the most deplorable, depressing state in the union ('sup IndyFrico?) moved to metro DC on Monday and am residing in College Park, Md., for the summer. I literally live four blocks from the College Park Metro stop and am about a 10 minute walk from campus. Unfortunately, there is no liquor store within walking distance, so I'll have to take the Metro to get to one ('sup AP?). But things are looking good so far. I'm working on getting a job and a more permanent place to live in the District, but today, I felt like taking a trip up to campus and taking some photos for you worthless fucks.

I did the same thing in late '05, but instead of moving from a shithole, I moved from Ventura, CA, which most people would not consider to be such a cesspool. Definitely not a step up as far as quality of life for most people, but I pretty much did it to be closer to my daughter's family. It's worked out well, so far.

Oh, HELL no! Definitely had to have a job waiting for me. Being a Fed, it's not terribly tough to find gov't work here. One thing that sucked a little is the locality pay. The Fed augments base salaries with percentage increases in areas deemed to be high-cost. Areas such as NYC, LA, and the Bay Area have locality pay of nearly 25%, maybe more. The DC area is just about as expensive as those places, but the locality pay is a little below 20%. Ventura County is considered part of the LA metro area, so the locality pay there is the same as LA. DC, however, is considered part of the Baltimore metro area (for reasons I've yet to figure out), so our locality pay is tied to B'more. After taxes, it doesn't make a huge difference in net pay, but it is slightly less.

I gotta RACK Screw on this decision. You only live once. Sure, you can play it safe your entire life and probably never have to worry about landing in a sticky situation. That's cool if that's what works for you. But there's nothing interesting in that. No life experiences to share. If you have a degree and skills in a certain field, what's really the worse that could happen? What, you might have to live a couple extra months with some weirdo roommates? So the fuck what? It'd be interesting, at least. I've known plenty of people who have packed their shit up and moved to their destination of choice, with little or nothing lined up. If you're competitive, the excitement of the challenge would drive you to succeed. Plus, it's tough to land a job when you live in another state. Employers just don't take you as seriously as the locals. Sometimes you do just have to pack your shit up and go.
