It's hard not to come to the conclusion that Don Barden was awarded Pittsburgh's coveted slots license because of his race.

The groups he was chosen over were better-known, better financed...and today they're laughing their asses off.

Myself, I'm convinced Mr. Barden was chosen as a feather of color in Ed Rendell's cap.

Oh well.

The only peeps allowed to suck the cash out of wallets out here with gambling venues are the indian tribes.

We did a seismic survey of a new indian gaming casino complex in no cal a few years back. It was a nine or ten million dollar building and a detached parking structure. We went back later for follow up after it had been open for only a year, and the big chief told us the 9 million dollar loan had just been fully paid off, and they had plans in place to double the size of the casino already in the works. sheesh.

Leave JFK out of this.

Do you honestly believe that if Obama was white he would have been able to cobble together any support for the nomination? A Senator with less than one term under his belt, no legislative accomplishments worth noting and armed with nothing more than standard Democratic boilerplate rhetoric? Look at Joe Biden and Christopher Dodd. They are far more accomplished than Obama and are every bit as liberal and they couldn't get a sniff.

Very good points. Race aside, though...I don't personally feel that any of the other dem candidates were clearly better than Obama, as the other slots license seekers were over Barden.

Same in Kansas, but that's about to change.

With all the budget shortfall problems you have in Cali, it's a wonder the pols haven't mined that lucre yet.

yep. Big proposition on the ballot here a couple of years back made the casinos pay a shitload of taxes on earnings. It passed easily.

These fires are bankrupting the states emergency funds, though. There are still over 300 fires burning here.

Leave JFK out of this.
JFK was in his second term, had 6 years in the house, a military record (trumped up admittedly) and a very powerful and rich daddy.

Compare this to a partial senate term, no US rep experience, no military service and a daddy who ran out on him as a small child.

All he has going for him is half black skin and an endorement from the Oprah. [biden]And he's so clean. [/biden]

It was still funny.

To me, at least. It's not like I care what the rest of you think.

Carry on.

Biden knocked himself out of any possibility of contention he might otherwise have had the same day he declared. Tell me you knew.

And while perhaps it isn't fair, there's no doubt a "rock star" element to capturing the Democratic Presidential nomination. Like him or not, Obama has it. Biden and Dodd, on the other hand, couldn't get it even if one of them were singlehandedly to bring about world peace and $1.50 per gallon gas prices in perpetuity. Maybe that's not fair, but that's the way it is.

And it's not restricted to the Democrats either. A few years back, your party nominated a candidate who had no elected office experience other than a term and change as governor of Texas (largely a figurehead position), was a self-described "bum" until the age of 40, had both a criminal conviction and a substance abuse problem in his past, and ran every business he ever touched into the ground, but daddy's name and his family money were enough to catapult him to the Republican nomination and two terms as President.

Biden has a decent amount of charisma, imo. Dodd? He is a fat obnoxious drinking buddy of ted. He's where he is for the same reason dubya is. He picked the right daddy.

As for Obama being a rock star, I will give you that behind a prompter he is very smoove, but, get him in front of real people where he has to actually express thoughts on the fly and he is a gibbering dumbfukk. Not just a tongue twisted dumbfukk like Dubya. Dubya mispronounces, but, eventually gets his point accross. Obammy OTOH runs into real trouble.

He couldn't carry slick willie's microphone.

If hillary wasn't such a universally unlikable person, she would have pummeled him.

The problem is, I don't know if gramps has what it takes to get over on him. Really wish it was romney or rudy up there. Especially rudy. He would have lynched that fukkker in a debate.

You can't seriously be suggesting that some fatuous, jug-eared Erkel has any sort of charisma. Did the media tell you that?

OK, it gets better.

Having made probably the worst possible choice in Barden and having exercised a far too loose hand initially, the PA Gaming Commission is going to fuck this up even worse by driving off the guy who has the experience and money to make it all work, Neil Bluhm.

I suppose I'm the fool for expecting otherwise for a minute there...

They should have let the Indians build it. Those fuckers have casinos popping up in california like zits on a 14 year old.

I really had no problem with black people until the other day when I saw Whoopi Goldberg on the View.
