I think the most amazing thing about that list is that FSU is at number 18. They didn't even have a football program until the 50s and didn't have their first ranking until 1977. They should have been ranked all the way back in '64 but for some reason they weren't. They only lost once that season and ended the year by beating OU in the Gator Bowl. Bias or inattention, something but they should have more rankings than they do.

Only 2 SEC teams in the top 10? 3 Big Ten teams? Ponderous.

MSU cracked the top 25. Cool. Wouldn't have guessed Ole Miss would be ahead of them, though.

I'm actually surprised to see Iowa that high considering how bad our program was pre-1981.

Iowa Pre-Flight??? Who the fuck is that? I wonder if maybe that's actually Drake University. Might have to look that up.

The final game on Nov 25 was a mutual home date with the University of Iowa Hawkeyes,
which had only one victory to their credit in 1944. This thin, ragtag civilian team seemed to be
a pushover for the talented Seahawks. Onlookers were astounded as Iowa put over the first
touchdown on a one-yard plunge by Bill Kersten to take a 6-0 lead. The surprised Seahawks were
in for a real fight, as the plucky Hawkeyes continued to battle. Finally, the Seahawks managed
to deadlock matters just before halftime as Lou King snuck over from less than a foot out. Iowa
Navy finally edged ahead in the third quarter on a four-yard run by Woodward. Then the dam
finally burst as the Seahawks mustered its power to full efficiency for three touchdowns in the
final quarter. The final score of 30-6 was an oddity, as all six touchdowns scored by the two
teams were followed by missed extra point attempts, something unheard of today. Charles
Woodward did the lion’s share of the ball carrying for the Seahawks on this day, as he amassed
152 yards on 37 carries. His true value in this game is highlighted by the fact that the other Pre-
Flight ballcarriers were limited to a mere 23 yards in 26 rushing attempts.

Ahahahahaha! 0-6 in extra points?? Rack that!! The refs totally jobbed us in that game.

Says Navy according to that link. I'm surprised I had never heard of them.

Iowa Pre Flight was a Navy training base attached to the University of Iowa. There were others around the country. UNC for sure maybe Georgia, etc. These were strictly flight training schools that used existing college facilities, but the cadets were not students at the host institutions. Iowa Pre Flight was pretty damn good and beat Iowa every time they played. Also had wins over Michigan, OSU, Nebraska, but never ND. They also had top notch coaches, as former Minn, Mizzou, and either Auburn or Alabama head coaches each took one season. Their mascot was the seahawks, a play on the hawkeyes and the sea.

I will look for a link to the book I read a few years ago about the Pre Flight programs and if anyone wants the book let me know and I will send it to you.

A good friend of my fathers was an Olineman at OU in the early 70s and says that everyone talks about OU/Neb but it was always Misery the Oline hated playing against. Said they were the meanest and strongest sons a bitches on earth in the late 60s and early 70s. Just didn't have the specialist athletes to overcome OU and nebraska.

FSU had a team in 1902-1904 and was known as Florida State College. Our first team as FSU was in 1947 but the Noles didn't start playing BIG TIME POWER COLLEGE FOOTBALL until 1951. I think the AP poll only did a top 10 in 1964. FSU cracked the Top 10 by beating #5 Kentucky 48-6 but lost it after our only lose of the season two weeks later. FSU finished 11th in the UPI. The best thing about 1964 was that FSU beat florida for the first time since 1904.

FSU is ranked:
14th all-time in Top 10 finishes
7th all-time in Top 5 finishes - 14 year run of Top 5 finishes definitely helped us out
10th all-time in #1 finshes

We are tied in all categories

I don't understand the significance of this. Don't you guys realize that the AP poll is completely meaningless?
