BTW-The Crazy 8's were so sood last night, it was insane. Dudes pushing 50 taking the younger acts to school, and still work a crowd better than any band I've ever seen.


Mentioned them to my 40-something slumpbuster from Boston. "Wasn't that that really killer band that was on that show with Ed McMahon in the 80's? They were awesome."


Yup, that was them. For our younger members here: American Idol isn't some radical new idea -- it was done in the 80's, too. Back then, it was called Star Search. The Crazy 8's were the runner-up (to some shitty Elvis impersonator or something equally forgettable)... and for some reason, appearing on primetime TV several times was like the death blow of their career. But they were a true INDIE band -- wouldn't sign with a major label, and created Redrum Records (still around) to produce, release, and promote their own stuff... and they paid the price for it...

But that's why us U&L 40-somethings laugh like hell when the kids these days talk about "indie"... since they don't know what the fuck they're talking about. It's an ideology, not a form of music, you stupid punks. If you have a recording contract -- you're not fucking "indie."

I know what Pitchfork is, dude. I have an edge on Pitchfork when it comes to discovering new music. I call it "friends." They're a wonderful way to immerse oneself in fresh, new stuff. Likewise, anything good I discover will get recommended to them. Word of mouth - cutting edge shit, eh?

That being said, Pitchfork does serve a valuable purpose. They're pretty good with late-breaking tour date news. Sometimes they have tour dates announced before a band's official website.

But that's why us U&L 40-somethings laugh like hell when the kids these days talk about "indie"... since they don't know what the fuck they're talking about. It's an ideology, not a form of music, you stupid punks. If you have a recording contract -- you're not fucking "indie."

I hate to break this to you...but it's both. "Indie" obviously has its literal definition, and it's also an acceptable way to broadly define a genre of music, Star Search Crazy 8's fame notwithstanding. I understand that in the U&L language and terminology doesn't evolve or take on alternate meanings, but you braindead hippy dipholes are going to have to accept the fact that it does everywhere else.

the Crue's version of Helter Skelter (also on Shout) is much better than the bloated, plodding ton of crap U2 put on Rattle and Hum.

They played Shout... and Looks That Kill (tunes my metalhead-ass actually used to enjoy in high school). But my favorite Crue song, also from the Shout album (we used to call them "albums" back then, kiddies, because that's how they came -- on vinyl) is Too Young To Fall In Love -- which they didn't play.


Best songs, IMO, were, of course... Livewire (which Vince left most of it for the crowd to sing)... and something I thought would never happen -- their pop hits from their glam-era -- Girl, Don't Go Away Mad, and Kickstart My Heart.

Who woulda thunk it... certainly not me, since those top-40 Crue songs were the bane of my 80's musical existence.


Just saw that Mick Mars is 57 fucking years old. I know he was older than the others when they started, but 57? And has always had some severe arthritis/degenerative spinal condition... even in the old days, he never moved around much. Old fucker still got it done, though. As dirty a words as "Motley Crue" were to me in the 80's, and all the "rad guitar players" discussions we had in which you never, EVER brought up the name Mick Mars... I always thought that fucker was pretty fucking good. But he never got arrested, never went to jail for killing his buddies or beating up his OL, and was never found passed out with a needle hanging from his arm, so he was never quite the household name the other clowns were. Matter of fact, IIRC, he would never speak to any reporter that didn't work for one of the guitar magazines, and always let the others do all his talking for him.



Vince still sounds the exact freaking same. Pretty impressive for a lifelong metal screecher, really.


Tommy -- well, I don't think middle age is being quite as good to Tommy as the others. I seem to remember dude's about 6'3... and I'll bet the rent he doesn't weigh in over 120 pounds. He did bring Jaegermeister for the audience, though -- always a crowd pleaser. Still possesses him one redeeming quality, though -- fucker can still play with the best of them... which is his ONLY redeeming quality... deplorable man.


Nikki -- still sporting the exact same hair. I guess if I innovated a hairstyle that became popular worldwide, and still had a full head of hair, I'd be flaunting it, too.



But you guys responded about the same way everyone I told both before and after the show has -- "Dude, that would be/was surely AWESOME. I'd love to see those guys [often 'again']"


They do kinda have 25 years professional experience working crowds at huge arena shows.



BTW -- caught the last few minutes of Buckcherry. If you ever get a chance to issue these guys...


Fucking run the other way... but only after punching whoever made the suggestion square in the mouth. Dear god, what an affront to my eardrums -- glad I was sitting in the first seat through the entry from the bar (and club-level bathrooms -- for old dudes, we had the best seats in the house... for free).

No doubt the 80s were one big party overshadowed by a whole lot of doom and gloom. Just look at some of the music we listened to back then. Just about every genre had 2 or 3 "end of the world" songs that were huge hits. You could easily have made up 3 or 4 mix tapes of songs that dealt with nothing but global destruction.

Hell, even "Don't Worry, Be Happy" was a downer song. "Born in the USA"? You can't help but laugh at all the dorks who thought that was a patriotic anthem on par with 'God Bless America". In fact, that whole album was nothing but depression cued to an uptempo happy beat.

in fact, i used to try and teach some of the gen x stuff: douglas coupland, slacker, waking life, both of which Linklater appropriates the Situationist International and Greil Marcus' book Lipstick Traces etc. in media classes.

never really works. the existential quality (while romanticized, to some degree) doesn't really come through. the kids don't give a shit.

one thing about Gen X is this: and this is common knowledge in ad textbooks, advertisers lost track of the young people for about 6 years (give or take, outside the MTV stuff). between about 81-87. now, advertisers drive youth culture, mostly. it's only about 85-86 when 120 Minutes or something tries to play catch up with the fact that "setters" aren't listening to Poison. then the Pixies kind of blow it up after that and "Indie" becomes a buzzword without much meaning. and "coolhunting" and such starts churning out "looks" and everyband in SPIN is a "Jane's/CHili Peppers" mix of old-school funk/punk etc.

Update --

Never heard of them before, but if you get a chance to see Langhorne Slim at a show, they come with a "two thumbs up" recommendation. Very energetic, very good. Fun band. My date was a longtime fan of the Old 97's, and thought Langhorne Slim was better.
