Slant eyed?
I initially thought they were going Winnie the Pooh, telling themselves to "think, think, think... this is how we will beat the Americans"
But since it took overtime for them to beat China, they better think again.

Looks like one hell of a baller.
Be very afraid, Western Conference.

I don't know who even does the fingers to the eyes routine anymore...I cracked up at the idea that the Spanish dusted off that old gem.
Our society seems to try to condition us for our initial reaction to see something that we'd assume insults another group of people to immediately denounce what was done or said as a way to show that we're not racist or insensitve. But you know deep down it really makes you laugh and you think people should just have thick skin and get over it. The overly-PC crowd gets whipped into a frenzy over crap like this and they start a campaign on the offended people's behalf and end up making fools of themselves by blowing a small issue out of proportion.
Honestly, we can't tell how other people should feel about a racial slur directed towards them. I can't tell a black person how to react to when someone uses the 'n word' in their presence. I leave it up to the group of people to form their own opinion. My feeling about this is the team probably shouldn't have done that but it's not something that I as an American white male should write angry letters about.
I say let the Chinese deal with it since this was directed towards them. Why the hell should we judge whether or not something Spanish people do towards Chinese people is right or wrong? When did we become the PC police? It probably won't cause an international incident. You aren't going to Chinese troops rolling into Madrid or Barcelona over this.
It's just a silly joke and we should just leave it be instead of getting on our high horse and denouncing the Spanish basketball team as a bunch of racists. This isn't our problem but since we seem to have a segment of our population that like to bitch about anything people do or say that can be considered offensive...it's probably something a civil rights group over here will get involved in because they have nothing better to do. See the whole retard/"Tropic Thunder" contraversy...if you can even call it that.

I’m not sure what segment of our population you’re talking about, Shoalzie. According to that article the only people raising a stink about it are the British Press and The Organization of Chinese-Americans. Oh, and some hack from Yahoo sports.

Speaking of hacks ...
I'm fairly certain Dan Wetzel is related to Toddowen.
Either that, or Yahoo is repaying China for a temporary reprieve of an "open" Internet.
Pathetic.

I kind of agree with Wetzel’s article. You look at some of those Chinese gymnasts, and wonder if they’re even as old as 14. One of them looks about 12. But the Karolyis need to shut the fuck up. It just comes across as sour grapes. Wetzel’s absolutely right on the money about the Karolyis need to be in the spotlight, and inability to lose with grace.

Toddowen wrote:You're Polish, right?
Gotta be.
A little bit Polish...but I'm sure you're implying I fit the stereotype of the stupid Polish person. Real fun there, friend...
I've got Irish, English, Swedish, Polish and German in my family tree. My grandfather on my dad side before he passed away tried to keep the German heritage a secret because he wasn't exactly fond of them...you know, with the whole Hitler/WWII thing. My grandmother has told us that he probably had some German heritage in addition Irish and English.
But I digress...
I did see on Headline News last night having someone with a Chinese American organization addressing. I didn't see much of it...whether or not it was a complaint or if it was just a discussion about the picture. I got to see the photo of the women's team doing the same thing...actually laughed out loud when I saw that photo for the first time. That was actually funnier than the picture of the men's team.
The whole point of what I said before was what do we have to say about something another ethnic group does towards another ethnic group. If it was our team doing that, then we've got something to talk about. I think the idea of people from Spain making fun of people from China is not our issue but since we seem to make news stories out of any remotely offensively gestures or speeches, it was too predictable that this photo would cause a bit of a stir over here.

Jason Kidd brings up the "double standard". He thinks Team USA would've been thrown out if they posed for that photo.
I don't know if Team USA would've been thrown out but they definitely would've become the villians of games...sort of like what USA hockey team became in Nagano after they trashed their rooms. The whole "ugly American" tag can be thrown on any act by an American athlete that is deemed as offensive or uncivilized.
That story about the Swedish wrestler that threw down his bronze medal in disgust is a pretty big story but imagine if it was an American wrestler who did that. He would've definitely got heat over there and back home as well.

Toddowen wrote:But that's the way it is with Polacks and their complicating the simple. Not only does it take 11 of them to screw in a lightbulb, but one lone Polack will ramble on the simplest subject for hours and pages. This is why there aren't a whole lot of Polish politicians. Nobody has the patience to listen to them except other Polacks.
If you don't want to read what I posted, don't read it...no big deal. This might be a shock to you but I don't post just for your single reaction. I simply posted an opinion...albeit a little lengthy. I went a little bit of a tangent. However, whether you liked what I said, I at least didn't leave it up to imagination what I was trying to say. You oughta know that I'm not shy when it comes to posting my view on something at length...extra emphasis on length. Sometimes a three word response or post an emoticon doesn't get the desired message across.

Nonsense. White Americans invented racism. This is the obvious legacy of 400 years of slavery and oppression.
We owe the people of China a sincere apology and, most likely, monetary reparation. Hopefully this will be enough to undo the damage and humiliation the Chinese have suffered.
Technically, if you're talking 400 years of oppression...those were European settlers in North America committing those acts on slaves. America absorbed those thoughts and beliefs when it became a nation in 1776 but those weren't "white Americans" that started it...they were Northern Europeans.
