As for the equipment I too would like to hear mvscal's take, my guess is that it's a combination of former Soviet Union country Russia - has the best equipment the Soviet's had and even much of that was said to be in disrepair - and the fact the breakaway region South Ossetia probably got older in more disrepair equipment.

That said, if their equipment is like the AK-47, it might look old, look rusty, but work real well and it appears it is.
