And all this just as the players were about to enter negotiations for a new CBA.

great player
as a representative for the players he left a lot to be desired
In 2006, he alienated many retired players after comments he made in response to 325 former AFL and NFL players receiving minimal retirement benefits. When the former players attempted to have the league and the Association consider their plight, Upshaw responded: "I don't work for them. They are not union members and they have no vote."
In June, 2007, when asked by the Philadelphia Daily News about fellow Hall of Famer Joe DeLamielleure's criticism, Upshaw replied "I'm going to break his Goddamn neck!" Prior to his death, a campaign was being led by Ravens kicker Matt Stover to oust Gene Upshaw as head of the NFLPA. Tennessee Titans center Kevin Mawae, president of the NFLPA, had denied reports of mass callings from players for Upshaw to step down.
yeah god forbid you give any part of those multimillions to help former players that gave their all to the game

What the fuck else was he supposed to do? Rush to their homes with umbrella drinks and back rubs?
no, I think it's quite noble to ignore his contemporaries that can't afford the health insurance they need to address their blown knees, crippled backs, dislocated shoulders, etc. etc.
but hey, he made the current crop rich

Without a salary cap the NFL would be every bit as fucked up as MLB. Tell me you knew.

I basically agree, but the owners share in that blame as well.

MLB is doing just fine- even with the Worst Commissioner Ever.
The NFL is just one crooked Ref away from being the new NBA- another league that has a salary-cap.

Ain't that the truth.
I had a mild case of pancreatitis a few years back and pretty much
wished I was dead. Up until then, I had no idea what the pancreas actually did. I was more thinking that my liver would be the first thing to go south.
What you don't know about the pancreas can fucking kill you.

Raiders Mourn Gene Upshaw
August 21, 2008
The Oakland Raiders mourn the passing of Raider Legend, Hall of Fame offensive guard and Executive Director of the NFL Players Association Gene Upshaw.
“The Raider Organization, the National Football League, and the world have lost a great man. Gene Upshaw’s career successes as a professional football player and a union leader are unparalleled. He is as prominent a sportsman as the world has known. He was and will remain a part of the fabric of our lives and of the Raider mystique and legacy. We loved him and he loved us. We will miss him. Our hearts go out to Terri and the boys.” — Al Davis

Hey Loco, great to see ya, bud.
Gene Upshaw -- GREAT player.
One could prolly make a strong case for him being one of the top 5 Raider players of all-time.

Pops, you're SORELY lacking with your Geritol intake....or Roast Dog is really starting to affect your gray matter.
I digress....Gene Upshaw will never be truly replaced as the leader of the NFLPA. He GOT IT when it came to what was best for the NFL and its players, and while it can be debated as to what degree he neglected taking care of the older former players, it CAN'T be debated that by and large Upshaw had a huge part in making the NFL the greatest professional sports league in the world.
